Red Velvet Cake Batter Puppy Chow

Our church had a dessert auction a few weeks ago and I was trying to come up with a creative dessert to bring.  I had really enjoyed the Cake Batter Puppy Chow that I posted a couple weeks ago, but I wanted to add a unique twist.  Red velvet is not usually my favorite flavor in cakes, but I thought the red would look really pretty for the dessert auction, so I decided to give it a try! I learned two things in this experience.

#1 – Red velvet cake mix does not turn red until it gets wet.  When I mixed it into the Chex pieces to coat them after stirring in the Almond Bark, it stayed…well…brownish.  Not the unique, pretty look I was going for in the dessert auction.  The powder did, however, turn red when I licked my fingers.

#2 – Red Velvet cake mix tastes amazing!!!  I honestly was not expecting to go crazy for it, but I did!  I couldn’t stop eating the stuff!

Because it didn’t have the best presentation, I decided not to include it in my dessert auction offerings, which meant I had to suffer through eating the entire batch myself…which I think may have happened either way.  Once I tasted this stuff, I was not very keen on sharing!  It seriously blew me away!  The perfect balance of sweet and crunchy and just sheer amazingness…I never predicted it would be such a tasty dessert for a not-so-crazy-about-red-velvet person like me.

  1. I made this and added red food color to the almond bark....instead of vegetable oil, I used butter Crisco solid, it came out awesome!
