More Than Conquerers: Overcoming Fear in Your Weight Loss Journey

You’re not good enough. You’re not strong enough. You can’t do this. What if I fail…again?

It’s hard enough to change all of those unhealthy habits in your life – getting yourself to exercise more, drinking more water, and eating more vegetables, but when your thoughts are constantly working against you, it sure can leave you feeling hopeless and defeated, like it isn’t even worth the effort because you’ll probably just fail anyways.

More Than Conquerers: Overcoming Fear in Your Weight Loss Journey - Use these 4 tips to fight back against your fear, doubt, & insecurity with Truth. You are more than a conquerer and can succeed in your weight loss journey!

I’ve been there. I’ve believed all of those things about myself.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! You were made for more. All of those fears and doubts about yourself are holding you back from living a life of true freedom in Christ, and you have all of the power you need to break those chains!

I want you to live a life of joy and purpose, so here are four ways that you can fight those fears in your life and be an overcomer, a conqueror, in your weight loss journey and beyond!

More Than Conquerers: Fighting Fear in Your Weight Loss Journey - Use these 4 tips to fight back against your fear, doubt, & insecurity with Truth. You are more than a conquerer and can succeed in your weight loss journey! 1. Take your thoughts captive.

That voice telling you that you’re too far gone? That’s a lie. And the one telling you that because you are overweight you are somehow less deserving of love, whether it’s from God or a significant other? That’s another lie. And that one telling you that life would be perfect, you could be successful, and that guy would fall in love with you if only you were thinYou guessed it! Lie, lie, lie.

We create a lot of our fears from entirely imaginary scenarios of “what ifs”!

Recognize when those thoughts sneak in, take them captive, and fight back against them with Truth. Ask yourself the question – “What does God have to say about this?” and look it up! Feeling weak? Awesome! God works best in our weakness! Overwhelmed? All you who are weary and burdened, God offers you rest. Doubting that you can do this? You can do all things in Him, the source of our strength.

The sword of God’s Word is one of the most powerful weapons you have – use it!

2. Take action.

Afraid of failure? Yeah, I was too. Actually, that’s not past tense. I’m afraid of failing all the time! Do it anyways.

You don’t even give yourself the chance to succeed when you let fear paralyze you. And when you start acting, one small change at a time, it makes such a difference! I spent years believing the only reason to eat vegetables and exercise was to lose weight. I had no idea that those two things alone had the power to boost my confidence and put me in a fabulously good mood!

When I exercise, I want to drink more water. When I drink more water, I have more energy. When I have more energy, I’m more productive and I sleep better, which makes me feel better in every way … and the domino effect goes on and on!

Small steps add up to big change, and you end up disproving those fears one by one as you continually move forward.

3. Leave room for God.

You are not going to be perfect.

You are going to overeat sometimes. You are going to skip workouts. You are going to grab a donut at church or a cookie at a work meeting at some point.

And that’s okay! Whoever said it was your job to be perfect? That space between our best and perfection is where God’s power comes through best, and He is more than enough.

Try hard, take action, and do the best you can, but then let go of the results.

Your best is all that you can give.

Let go of that impossible burden of trying to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Show yourself grace and leave room for God in the margins. When you let Him fill in all of those cracks, fear sure has a hard time finding a way in.

4. Celebrate your victories!

It’s easy to beat yourself up for not being where you want to be. You thought you were going to lose 10 pounds this month and you only lost four. Dang it!

I know that feeling of frustration so well, but you don’t have to wait until you reach your goal weight to celebrate!

Don’t let perfectionism rob you of the joy of your small victories.  You didn’t reach for the potato chips last night after dinner? Way to go! You ordered an extra side of veggies instead of the french fries? You rock! Give yourself permission to celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

Every single victory is more proof that you are more than a conqueror.

And, in those victories, fear loses it’s power.

No matter how much weight you have to lose, no matter how unworthy you feel, the truth is that you are an overcomer. You are dearly loved and that perfect love casts out all fear.

You’ve got this.

What doubts are holding you back in your weight loss journey? Are there any areas you are stuck because of fear?
