Now THAT was a cake tasting, a weight loss tip for dealing with peer pressure, I can’t wait to be his aunt, our happy little house, the best Father’s Day card ever for my almost-in-laws, and goat yoga.
Every week, I make time to connect with the most important people in my life. I have small group, weekly family dinner, Monday phone dates with my best friend, and Skype dates with my prayer partner.
Which is why I want to have a Friday virtual coffee date with you.
I would absolutely love to meet you in person and hear about the ups and downs and in-betweens of your life, but since that’s difficult to manage, the next best thing would be for you to leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I really do care about what’s going on with you! I have an ongoing list in my prayer journal of blog readers who have reached out to me sharing struggles, successes, and just everyday life stuff and I love all of it!
Here’s what’s been going on in my world.
An Impressive Cake Tasting
We had done a “cake tasting” (if you can even call it that) at a local grocery store and had been pretty disappointed. We had about 2 cake crumbs each and, more than that, the customer service was sorely lacking (and I offer a lot of grace to hard-working service professionals.
Instead, we went with the daughter-in-law of one of our small group people to bake our cake. When she offered a cake tasting, I figured it would be a small piece of each.
Nope! We got a full double-layer 6″ cake for each flavor!
We tried spice cake and cinnamon cake with almond cream filling and then lemon raspberry and orange raspberry cake with raspberry filling – all of them covered in cream cheese frosting.
The orange raspberry was out of this world and instantly won me over, so that’ll be the flavor for our big tier. Adam had been leaning toward the spice or cinnamon, but the lemon raspberry won him over, so that’ll be the flavor for our smaller tier. Light, citrusy flavors for a summer wedding!
A Weight Loss Tip For Peer Pressure
Don’t eat food just because it’s there.
We had a LOT of cake. All of it was good, but I wasn’t crazy about the cinnamon or spice cakes and I decided years ago that I didn’t want to eat a bunch of calories on foods I found only okay.
We shared those cakes with my parents, sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew, and we still had some leftover.
My dad still has a bit of a Great Depression mindset, which is fantastic for saving money, but not great for weight loss, so when he pressured me to eat the rest just so it didn’t go to waste, I gently but firmly said no (see also why I quit the clean plate club).
You better believe I enjoyed more orange raspberry cake, but the other cakes weren’t a treat for me, so even in the face of peer pressure, I stood firm on what I was and wasn’t willing to eat.
I Can’t Wait To Be His Aunt
Growing up, I had an aunt and uncle who sent me a birthday card with a check for the dollar amount equal to my age inside.
Every year, I looked forward to it, not only for the money, but because I felt so special that they remembered, even on years I hadn’t see them at all.
I want my nieces and nephews to feel like that, so Adam and I started sending those cards at the beginning of this year.
His nephew sent a thank you card back and my heart just about melted at his words.
I can’t wait to be his aunt.
Our Happy Little House
We are renting a cute little house this year and we got the keys this week!
We have been praying over this house for months. Not only do we have an amazing landlord, but it has everything we were looking for – a backyard for Boots (my border collie), an extra bedroom for my home office, an open kitchen, and even a garage.
I can’t wait to get fully moved in!
Last weekend, we moved all of my stuff over to the house. I am forever indebted to my dad and brother-in-law who have moved my stuff over and over again in multiple states from houses to storage units to basements and finally over to our new house!
This stuff has been packed up for over 2 years now, so I can’t wait to break open those boxes and set up house!
The Best Father’s Day Card Ever
I’ve been trying to get everything planned ahead of time so that wedding week goes smoothly. And, since Father’s Day is the day after our wedding, I knew I needed to have the cards ready ahead of time.
I found the perfect card for Adam’s dad!
After seeing an ad for a local goat yoga class advertised on Facebook, I started (kindly, gently) prodding Adam to do got yoga with me.
He’s fine with the goats, it’s the yoga part he’s not so sure about.
The very next day, he drove by a huge sign advertising goat yoga and I told him it must be God sending him a literal sign that he should do goat yoga with me.
I think I’m going to wear him down so he’ll take a class with me this summer.
Stay tuned (because those pictures would be so cute!).
Unfortunately, that won’t be happening too terribly soon because I have somehow re-irritated an old shoulder injury that is pretty angry with me at the moment.
The dogs remind me almost daily of the joys of deep relaxation.
In this way, I aspire to be more like them – sleeping upside-down, enjoying belly rubs, running hard and then crashing with a nap.
