My husband got hit by a semi, our happy 4th of July, my favorite new toy, praying like David, filling up on natural sugars, peacefully coexisting, my heart broke a little bit, and baby birds.
Every week, I make time to connect with the most important people in my life. I have small group, weekly family dinner, Monday phone dates with my best friend, and Skype dates with my prayer partner.
Which is why I want to have a Friday virtual coffee date with you.
I would absolutely love to meet you in person and hear about the ups and downs and in-betweens of your life, but since that’s difficult to manage, the next best thing would be for you to leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I really do care about what’s going on with you! I have an ongoing list in my prayer journal of blog readers who have reached out to me sharing struggles, successes, and just everyday life stuff and I love all of it!
Here’s what’s been going on in my world.
My Husband Got Hit By A Semi
Adam got in a car accident on his way to work earlier this week. And, as car-versus-semi accidents go, this was pretty much a best case scenario!
Adam is completely fine (and I’ve been praising God for that all week!). The other driver was at fault and he was completely fine, too (and it sounds like he was very apologetic).
We still haven’t heard about the fate of his car, but as long as we have a reliable car to get him to and from work, we’re happy!
Our Happy 4th of July
Adam and I had talked about all kinds of different 4th of July options – parades, parties, fireworks, etc.
We decided to keep it low-key this year and I am so thrilled we did!
We had a slow morning (my favorite kind!). Adam made me breakfast (and cleaned it all up afterward!) while I wrote a blog post and it was the most beautiful way to start the day.
Have I mentioned that I love being married to this man?!
We did some more working and unpacking around the house, then headed over to my parents’ house for a barbecue with my sister’s family.
It seems like every holiday I spend with my family, the food just keeps getting better and better!
This year we had ribs, burgers, homemade baked beans, guacamole, chips, watermelon, and veggies with dill dip with a deliciously festive dessert that my sister made.
We went back to our house afterward and it turned out that we didn’t need to decide whether to watch fireworks or not.
It seemed like we were the only ones in the entire neighborhood that weren’t setting off fireworks! Every direction you looked around our house, you could see flashes of light and color in the sky.
And, much to Boots’ dismay, the booming and popping was pretty constant until about midnight. The poor dog was shaking in his…well…boots all night long and trying to get as close to us as possible (which meant we had a 70-pound border collie in our lap for most of the night).
It was such a beautiful holiday.
My Favorite New Toy
I’m sure you’ve heard of a Roomba (the robotic vacuum that cleans your floors so you don’t have to).
Well, when we were making our wedding registry, I stumbled across the iLife. It’s a robotic vacuum (that also mops!) for a fraction of the price of the Roomba.
Adam’s aunt and uncle bought it for us and I am already in love!
It’s hard to stay on top of all of the fur my border collie sheds and now with Adam’s cat’s fur added to it, we needed some reinforcements (so that I could have a life outside of vacuuming).
This little guy does all of the heavy lifting for me and it’s hilarious to watch the animals’ reactions as he bounces his way around the house.
We’re trying to come up with a good name for him, but we haven’t settled on one quite yet.
Praying Like David
I was so moved by our sermon last weekend. It was the inspiration behind my post this week, encouraging you to pray powerfully for your weight loss journey, but I’m applying it to every area of my life.
I took some time to think about the 3 areas I struggle with most in my life and I applied these 4 principles to them throughout the week.
Every morning, I’ve started my day with very intentional, focused prayers to draw nearer to the Lord and trust Him on a deeper level.
It’s never an overnight process, but I love having a new way to deepen my relationship with God.
Filling Up On Natural Sugar
There’s no denying that I love sweets. Cookies, cakes, salted caramel, Nutty Bars…bring ’em on.
But, obviously, I try not to go too crazy with all of the refined sugar.
I don’t, however, restrict whole fruit. When those natural sugars are balanced with the fiber, water, vitamins, and minerals in fruit, it remains a healthy food, even with the sugar.
I’m not going to become a fruitarian anytime soon (yup, that’s a thing), but a fridge full of fruit makes me so happy!
Bella, Adam’s cat, is not the biggest fan of Boots.
Boots loves pretty much all creatures, but he’s a pretty in-your-face kind of dog because he wants to be your friend.
For some reason, Bella doesn’t appreciate that much, so she has stayed pretty cautious around Boots so far.
But, the other night, as we were watching a TV show, this happened. They were only inches away from each other and it was Bella that climbed onto my lap.
My Heart Broke A Little
It is a well-known fact that I am very attached to my water bottle.
It’s never more than a few feet away from me and I sip from it consistently all day long.
It goes with me to the grocery store, to church, to the movies…
The other day, I took it out of the dishwasher and temporarily set it on top of the fridge. When I closed the refrigerator door, it tumbled to the ground and the plastic just couldn’t hold up to the blow against the tile.
I have a spare bottle that I’ve been using, but it’s just not the same.
This Week In Marriage
- Adam earned MEGA bonus points for, not only making me breakfast, but also cleaning it all up
- I’m slowly teaching Adam sign language (I was a sign language interpreter for 8 years). This week’s lesson was him copy signing as we signed “My Heart Will Go On” as we cleaned up after dinner.
- Trying to figure out how to fit 2 tall humans, a 70-pound border collie, and an obese cat onto one queen sized bed for sleeping is a challenge.
- Hearing Adam and my nephew laughing and playing together is one of my favorite sounds in the world
- Our evening walks are one of my favorite things to do after he gets home from work, but we really need to remember to put on bug spray.
One of my favorite parts of our new house is the back porch. We are surrounded by tall trees, which means there are always squirrels hopping from tree to tree and birds chirping.
After my morning runs, I’ve been eating breakfast outside with my journal and soaking in the sounds of the morning.
This week, there were baby birds in a nest inside of our porch and those little chirps are just the sweetest sound!
