Prayers For Graduation
1. A Prayer For Guidance For The New Grad
“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” – Isaiah 58:11
When students graduate it can be daunting to know what your next steps are. The familiar schedule that they have known and plans that they have had for the last few years of their lives are coming to an end, and the future may feel unknown.
As graduates consider their next steps, they could use some guidance, especially from above. As you consider ways to pray for graduates, ask God to provide them with guidance and give them clarity on the way forward.
Lord,
Thank You for how You have faithfully led and guided our graduates through all their years of studies. You have carried them through in many ways, and now they get to celebrate the fruit of their hard work.
As they step into this new chapter of their lives, I ask that You continue to guide them and show them the way. May they find strength and comfort in You as they embark on their new ventures.
May You not only guide them in their work, and dreams but guide them in all truth and the knowledge of You. May they know You personally, and may Your Word be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. A Prayer For Wisdom For Their Next Season
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.” – Psalm 111:10
Throughout their studies, graduates have gained knowledge and experience in their chosen field of study.
Though the knowledge in textbooks is valuable and useful for certain fields of study, there is a different kind of knowledge, or wisdom that is even more important for them to hold.
Scripture tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. True wisdom cannot be apart from knowing and fearing God. That is an even greater wisdom to wish upon graduates than that of the world.
Father,
There is no wisdom such as wisdom that comes from You. As these new graduates set out into the world, my prayer is that they will pursue the wisdom that comes from You.
May they know that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. May they know Your precepts and grow in their understanding.
Grant them wisdom as they make decisions regarding their future, and remind them that You are sovereign, and know the course of their life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. A Prayer Of Purpose
“I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’” – Isaiah 46:10
We all search and seek for a purpose in life. When you are newly graduating it can feel especially important to figure out what your purpose is or how you can live a life that feels purposeful.
There is no better place to seek guidance and direction for what to do with your life and what purpose you serve than to ask the One who created you.
In the same way, we can ask God to work in the hearts of new graduates and to lead them on the path that He has set out for them.
Lord,
I lift up every graduate to You in prayer, thanking You for creating each of them in the wonderful image of Yourself. They are all in an important stage in their lives, and hoping to pursue lives of purpose.
Though we may have our own plans, it is ultimately Your purposes that are fulfilled, and nothing can thwart that. My prayer is that our graduates will not seek their purpose from the world but find it in You.
May they seek Your will for their lives and submit to the plans that You have for them, knowing that they can place their trust in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. A Prayer To Use Their Skills, Knowledge, & Talents
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” – 1 Peter 4:10-11
Those who have spent their time obtaining a formal education often do so with the desire to gain knowledge, skills and grow in their talents. Many who have a natural talent or aptitude for a specific subject or field will learn to grow in their skills and understanding.
Just as God has given us each a skill, or talent, we can ask God to help graduates find opportunities to use their skills, knowledge, and talents and do it in a way that glorifies Him and will be beneficial to those who are on the receiving end of it.
Heavenly Father,
As our new graduates set out on their careers, we ask that You give them guidance and clarity as they face different decisions and challenges.
You’ve created them each with talent, and they have grown both in knowledge and skill throughout their years of study. Please help them to find positions that would make use of those talents, skills, and knowledge that they have acquired.
Provide them with opportunities to do what they are good at, and to serve others well in their work. May they find meaning and joy in the path that they choose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
5. A Prayer Of Celebration
“The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.” – Psalm 118:24
After many long days of lessons, nights of studying, and stressful examinations, there is nothing quite as rewarding as finally getting to celebrate and enjoy the accomplishment of all the hard work that you have put into your studies.
Graduation is a wonderful time of celebration, where graduates are honored for the work that they have done, and all the years that they have committed to their education.
Lord,
This is the day You have made, and it is a joyous day indeed! Today we celebrate the hard work of our graduates who have labored for years to get to this point. May this day be filled with joy and celebration as they enjoy their reward.
May they look back with fond memories at all their lessons, the friendships they have made, and the difficulties that they have endured to get where they are today.
Help them to place all their worries and cares on You, and to live in the joy and peace that You give, knowing that You are with them and will lead them through the next chapter too. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you’ve studied for years and years, it can be hard to remember all that you have read, and we’re taught.
At the end of a graduate’s studies they have grown immensely in their knowledge and skills, and depending on their next steps or career that they will go into will need to retain a lot of that information.
You can ask God not only to bless the minds and memories of these new graduates but to help them continue to be learners in life.
Gracious God,
Thank You for every graduate who has persevered, and has been able to see their studies through. You know the hard work that they have put in and how they have applied themselves to their course.
I ask that You help them to retain the things that they have studied, and bring to memory that which may have gotten lost. Help them to continue to sharpen their knowledge and memories, especially as they enter the workforce. In Jesus’ name, amen.
7. A Blessing For Their Next Steps
“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24
No matter where we find ourselves in life, the next steps and the unknown can always feel overwhelming or daunting.
As graduates bask in the celebrations of their achievements, they are already thinking ahead, and wondering what comes next.
Because it can be so hard to find a job or know what the future holds, one of the ways we can support graduates is by asking God to bless their next steps and to lead them to new doors of opportunity.
Lord,
We are grateful to see our graduates reach this milestone in their lives. I know it did not come easily, and many endured hardships to get to this point, yet You have seen them through.
As they consider their next steps, I pray that Your Word will be a guiding light for them. May they know You, and seek Your face in every decision that they have to make.
May they be those who delight in You, and whose steps You make firm. Please bless their next steps, and guide them to the plans and purposes that You have for them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
