31 Days Of Blessings To Speak Over Your Children

|

Speak these 31 blessings over your children to encourage their hearts, guide their path, and remind them of God’s great love for them.

Blessings are such a beautiful gift to give to your children. Our words as parents hold a special kind of power in our children’s lives and using them to encourage them and speak life into their lives is one of the best gifts we can offer, whether your child is a newborn or in their 40s.

How is a speaking a blessing over your children different than a praying for them?

Praying for your children is a way to lift them up before the Lord and ask for help for them. Speaking a blessing over them is a way to actually impart spiritual life, the goodness of God, to them.

Instead of speaking to God about them, this is you speaking God’s Word directly to and over them. It’s a way to remind them of their identity in Christ and of God’s great love for them.

It reminds them of their purpose and calling. It builds them up and encourages them using the Word of God.

Praying for your children is wonderful and good! Speaking blessings over your children is not something to do instead of praying for them, it’s something to do in addition to it. They both are so beneficial!

How To Speak A Blessing Over Your Child

1- Start with Scripture.

It’s always important to stay rooted in God’s Word for our desires for our children so the Bible is a natural place to start. Find a Bible verse that talks about something you’d like to see in your child’s life – a character trait, peace, joy, etc.

If you don’t have any Bible verses that instantly pop into your mind, you can always do a Google search for “Bible verses on joy” and pick one that stands out to you.

2 – Make it personal.

This is my favorite part of a blessing – taking Scripture from historical words on the page and making them personal by adding your child’s name.

For example, if I’d chosen Romans 15:13 for my blessing (“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”), I might say something like:

“Noah, may God fill you with joy as you trust in Him.”

3 – Speak it over them.

The last step is just saying the blessing over them. My favorite way to do this is speaking it directly to our child at bedtime, but there are no rules for how to do this.

You can write a blessing that you send in a card to your adult child or in a note you send in your middle schooler’s lunchbox. You can say it over them at dinnertime or right before they get out of the car at school drop-off.

I’ve found it helpful to make it a regular part of our routine so that I don’t get caught up in our busyness and forget to do it, but do whatever works best for your family!
