Anniversary Prayers

1. A Prayer To Love Selflessly

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Lord,

We love, because You first loved us. Thank You for showing us what true love looks like. It is not only a love that gives when times are good, but a love that sacrifices, just as Christ did for us. We are so grateful that we get to experience even a glimpse of this kind of love in our marriage. Though neither of us are perfect, and we do not always choose to love, we are thankful that You have given us more time with one another.

It can be easy to put our own needs above one another’s, but we know that You call us to live the opposite way. Help us to love one another unselfishly, not only when it feels easy to love one another but especially when it feels hard. Remind us that love is not circumstantial. It is not only

when we are happy with one another, or when we agree on things. But even when we disagree, or when we are tempted to frustration, remind us to choose love. Remind us that love is something we get to choose, it is not dependent on our ever-changing feelings.

When it feels hard to love, please help us to rely on You, and to treat one another with love, instead of waiting on feelings to move us to action. May our love truly grow to become patient, kind, humble, honoring, selfless and forgiving. Helps us to protect, trust, hope and perseverance in the love we share for You and for one another.

2. A Prayer To Grow As A Team

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. Father,

Thank You so much for bringing my spouse and I together as one. Sometimes it is hard to imagine what life was like before, because our lives are so beautifully intertwined. You have created marriage to be a union between one man and one woman. And You have brought us together to become a unit, and a family that represents You to the world.

Thank You for giving us this gift to live out together. We are grateful to have one another, and to run this journey side by side.

We confess there are times when we forget that we are not against one another, but that we are a team. When we are facing problems in life, please remind us that it is not us against one another but us against whatever issue that we are facing. Help us support one another better, and see the gift in being able to do life together.

Forgive us for the times when we have taken one another for granted, or we have lived as two unified people instead of one unified couple.

Please help us to continually seek Your face individually and as a couple. May Your word truly be the foundation of our marriage, and our lives as a team. Remind us that two are truly better than one, and to both use and appreciate the different strengths that You have given us to better our marriage.

3. A Prayer to Forgive One Another

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

Dear God,

It wouldn’t even be possible to stand before You today if it weren’t for Your forgiveness. Thank You for the undeserving grace and kindness that You have shown us through Christ. We know that You did not only forgive us, so we can keep it to ourselves, but You forgave us and gave us the command to forgive others.

We know that marriage is built on a few core pillars, but forgiveness may be one of the most important ones.

Please help us to extend Your forgiveness to each other. When we have hurt one another, caused an offense, or sinned against each other, please help us to communicate with one another. Keep us from growing bitter or resentful towards each other. Help us to show each other grace, knowing that we are fallible and will disappoint and even hurt one another at times.

Help us to improve our communication and to be quick to hear and slow to speak. Help us not to minimize one another’s concerns but to listen intently and to do our best to respond in love and compassion. On our anniversary this year, remind us of the forgiveness that You show us each day, and help us to strive to honor one another with that same forgiveness.

4. A Prayer To Put One Another First

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” – Romans 12:10

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another year of marriage. We are thankful for the grace that You have shown us through our marriage, and we are learning and growing with time. If there is anything that marriage shows us it is just how easy it is to be selfish. Through marriage You have helped us to become more aware of the needs of others.

We confess, there are many times when the easy route is to think of ourselves first, and to do what is most comfortable or beneficial to us. But the love and service You call us to live out goes against our fleshly instincts.

In our own strength, we admit that we can do nothing. Our prayer is that You will give us a renewed desire to serve one another selflessly. Help us to learn from the life of Christ, and to not only be hearers of Your word but to be doers. Remind us that we get the opportunity everyday to grow in our service and devotion to one another.

Please help us to honor each other above ourselves. Help us to consider one another’s needs, and to serve each other with humility and love.

5. A Prayer to Remain Committed

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” – Mark 10:9

Lord,

Thank You for the gift of marriage. It is so easy to take it for granted, and to forget that marriage is not man made, it is Your creation.

Thank You for blessing us with this union, and for helping us see a glimpse of the relationship between Christ and His bride, the church. The world today has treated marriage as though it is something that is disposable, and it is truly heartbreaking to witness.

No matter how tough life gets, please remind us that marriage is precious in Your sight. In Your word You have said that no one should separate what You have joined together. Thank You for bringing us together, Lord.

Please give us the hearts to honor our marriage in the way that You call us to. Help us each day to remain true to one another, and to see our vows through. I pray that You will be with us through stormy seasons, and help us to grow stronger as a team, instead of drifting apart as enemies.

May our marriage reflect Your unending grace and love, and be a light to the world around us.
