10 Prayers for Tired Moms (When You’re Running on Empty)
Motherhood has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.
It’s also one of the most physically, emotionally, and spiritually demanding.
Between my own years of motherhood (as I’m writing this post, I have two boys – a six-year-old and an almost-four-year-old) plus nearly seven years of debilitating insomnia (that hit as soon as I got pregnant with my first son), I know what it feels like to love your children with your whole heart while also wondering how on earth you’re possibly going to make it through another day on so little sleep.
I know what it’s like to hear, “Mom! Mom! Mom!” before you’ve even finished your first sip of coffee.
To feel touched out. Overstimulated. Behind on everything (any other work from home moms out there? 🙋🏼♀️).
To desperately want to respond with gentleness while feeling like your patience is hanging on by a thread.
I know what it’s like to look at your precious child and think, I love you so much…I just wish I had more of me to give you today.
Some days, motherhood feels like a constant pouring out. Breakfast. Laundry. Snacks. Tantrums. Questions. Diapers. Homework. Spills. Bedtime. Repeat.
It’s beautiful. And it’s exhausting.
During the hardest years of my insomnia, I remember praying some incredibly desperate prayers. They weren’t polished or eloquent. Most of them sounded more like, “Help me, Jesus.” Over and over again.
Sometimes that was all I had.
Maybe that’s where you are today, too.
Maybe you’re rocking a baby back to sleep for the fourth time tonight. Maybe you’re trying to homeschool while caring for a toddler. Maybe you’re walking through postpartum exhaustion, a child with extra needs, or simply the beautiful, relentless work of raising little people who need so much from you every single day.
Whatever brought you here, I’m really glad you’re here.
These are prayers I’ve prayed myself. Not because I always knew the “right” words, but because I desperately needed the Lord to meet me in my weakness.
If you’re too tired to find your own words today, I hope you’ll borrow mine.
Our God is so kind to weary people.
He doesn’t ask us to come to Him after we’ve finally gotten enough sleep, found more patience, or pulled ourselves together. He invites us to come exactly as we are, trusting that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Let’s pray.

10 Prayers For Tired Moms
Asking God for Strength
Lord,
I’m tired, far beyond what one good night of sleep could fix. I love these people so much, but my body, my heart, my mind…they are all exhausted from pouring myself out for the people I love most.
I know You are El Roi, the God who sees. You see every early morning, every interrupted night, every meal I’ve made, every tear I’ve wiped away, every question I’ve answered, every ounce of patience, and every tiny act of love that no one else noticed.
Sometimes I wonder how I can possibly keep going like this, when it feels like my strength has run out.
Thank You that I don’t have to rely on my own strength. Your Word reminds me that “those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). When I feel like I have nothing left to give, remind me that Your strength never runs out.
Please give me enough strength to carry me through today. Give me exactly what I need, like the manna You gave to provide for the Israelites…for the next conversation, the next diaper change, the next bedtime story, the next interruption, and the next opportunity to love my family well.
I need You, Lord, and I trust You to carry me through another day.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength…”
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
Seeking Patience
Father,
I want to be a patient mom.
I want my children to remember a mother who responded with gentleness instead of frustration, who listened before speaking, and who reflected Your love in the way I cared for them.
I know I’m not capable of mustering up that kind of patience on my own…a patience that can withstand exhaustion, overstimulation, and being asked to function beyond my capacity. I’m not strong enough and can’t white-knuckle my way there.
Thank You for giving me patience as a fruit of Your Spirit, not something I have to grit my teeth and create myself.
As I walk with You today, leaning into You for strength, would You grow that fruit in me? Slow my reactions. Help me pause before I speak. Pull out any root of bitterness or irritation and replace it with tenderness for these children who are such a gift from You.
May they experience more of You through me today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience…”
Galatians 5:22 (ESV)
Praying For Rest
Jesus,
You know how desperately I long for rest.
Sometimes it’s sleep. Sometimes it’s simply five quiet minutes without someone needing me. Sometimes it’s the deep soul-rest that only comes from sitting in the stillness of Your presence.
You invite the weary to come to You, and today, that’s exactly what I’m doing. With tired arms, I’m lifting all I have and all that I am up into Your Almighty care, trusting that You will give me rest.
Would You calm my racing thoughts? Quiet the anxious places in my heart. Regulate my nervous system so I can help them regulate theirs.
Provide pockets of rest to get through my day and help my body sleep deeply and peacefully tonight.
Sustain me with Your grace and gently restore my soul in ways only You can.
Thank You for being my Shepherd who leads weary people beside still waters.
Amen.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
For Peace When I’m Overstimulated
Lord,
Some days, everything feels loud – questions, crying, music, toys, people talking over one another, someone touching me every few seconds.
By the end of the day, my nervous system feels completely overwhelmed and overstimulated.
It feels like too much.
But You are a God of peace that passes all understanding, and that doesn’t cease to be true in the midst of tantrums and noise.
You are the God who brings peace to chaos and order to disorder and I ask You to do just that right now in my house, in my family, and in my body.
When my body feels tense and my mind feels scattered, help me notice Your presence.
Slow my breathing. Steady my thoughts. Help me respond instead of react.
Give me the wisdom to step away for a moment when I need to, the humility to ask for help when it’s available, and the gentleness to return with a calmer heart.
May Your peace become bigger than the noise around me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Offering My Widow’s Mite
Father,
Today I feel like the widow with her two small coins (Luke 21).
It doesn’t feel like I have enough to offer. My energy is spent, my patience feels thin, my body is tired, and my mind is foggy.
And yet, these precious children still need me.
Lord, here is my widow’s mite. It may not feel like enough to me, but I place it into Your hands anyway in an act of trust.
Please take my offering – of love, my tired faithfulness, my ordinary acts of service, my heart that aches to offer more…and multiply them however You choose.
Where I fall short, be enough.
Where I am weak, be strong.
Where I feel inadequate, remind me that You have always delighted in using small offerings surrendered to You.
Please use it for Your glory today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Asking For Gentle Words
Father,
Please guard my tongue today against sharp words. Help my words be slow, thoughtful, gentle, and full of grace. Use them to encourage my children, build them up, de-escalate stressful situations, and bring peace to our home.
When correction is needed, help me speak from a place of love and calm strength instead of frustration. When my children need comfort, help my voice become a safe, soft place for them to land.
Would You also shape my children’s hearts? Help their words, tones, and attitudes honor You, too.
May the words spoken in our home reflect Your kindness more and more each day.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“A gentle tongue is a tree of life…”
Proverbs 15:4 (ESV)
A Prayer For After I’ve Lost My Patience
Lord,
I am so sorry for losing my patience. I love my children so much, and I want to love them well.
I want to be a mom who is calm, caring, and responsive to my kids, balancing my priorities well, and still getting done what needs to be done.
But I fell short again. Please forgive me, and help me to forgive myself, too.
Give me the humility to apologize when I need to and repair any relationships that were hurt by my frustration.
Help me repair what’s been broken and remind my children, through my example, that asking for forgiveness is a beautiful part of following You.
Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning. Thank You that I don’t have to carry shame after every mistake because Jesus has already paid for all of my sins with His work on the cross.
Help me to walk forward in the freedom I have in You alone.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning…”
Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
Trusting You With Tomorrow
Father,
I’m already wondering how I’ll do this all again. How I’ll find the energy and the patience. How I’ll keep up with the laundry, the meals, the messes, and everything else waiting for me. How I’ll be able to carry this weight another day. It feels so heavy, and I am exhausted.
Help me to feel Your presence, to see Your provision, and to feel the lightness of my shoulders when I lift things up and hand them over to You.
Thank You that tomorrow’s grace hasn’t been given to me yet because tomorrow isn’t here.
Help me stay present with the people You’ve placed in front of me today. Teach me not to borrow tomorrow’s worries before You’ve provided tomorrow’s strength.
I trust that when morning comes, You’ll meet me there, just as faithfully as You’ve met me today.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Seeking Joy In The Middle Of The Mess
Father,
Some days, I am so spent that I struggle to feel joy, even in the things I normally love.
The laundry is overflowing. The dishes are piled up. Someone needs another snack. Someone else can’t find their shoes.
And I’m so tired.
Thank You that the joy You offer isn’t dependent on perfect circumstances.
It’s a fruit Your Spirit grows, even in ordinary, messy, exhausting seasons.
Open my eyes to notice little gifts today – the belly laugh, the sticky hug, the bedtime prayer, the tiny hand reaching for mine.
Help me delight in the beautiful moments You scatter throughout this season, even when they’re surrounded by dirty dishes and unfolded laundry.
Thank You for being present in every ordinary moment of motherhood. Help awaken my heart to delight in them, even when I’m tired.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Noticing My Body With Compassion
Father,
You created this body with such incredible wisdom. You designed it to need food, sleep, quiet, movement, deep breaths, and rest, but when life gets busy and little people need so much from me, it’s easy to become frustrated with my own needs.
Please forgive me for the times I’ve treated my body like an inconvenience instead of a gift You’ve entrusted to me.
Help me become a better noticer. Help me notice when I’m hungry instead of pushing through until I’m irritable. Help me notice when I’m holding my breath, clenching my jaw, or carrying tension in my shoulders. Help me recognize when I’m becoming overstimulated before I react in frustration.
Teach me to notice the signals You’ve built into my body with curiosity instead of criticism, and with compassion instead of frustration.
Give me wisdom to respond to those needs however I can today, whether that means drinking a glass of water, stepping outside for fresh air, asking for help, taking a slow deep breath, or taking a nap.
Remind me that caring for the body You’ve given me isn’t selfish. It’s faithful stewardship.
As I learn to notice my own needs with compassion, help me notice my children’s needs with that same gentleness, too.
Thank You for creating me as a whole person. May I care for this body You’ve entrusted to me in a way that honors You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
