30 April Journal Prompts for Wholehearted Surrender
30 April journal prompts for wholehearted surrender to help you loosen your grip, release striving, and trust God with outcomes, limits, and control.
There is a kind of faith that looks strong on the outside but feels exhausting on the inside.
It is the faith that tries to carry everything. The faith that unintentionally believes…If I just try harder, organize better, pray more specifically, anticipate every possible outcome… maybe I can hold this together.
But wholehearted surrender is different.
Wholehearted surrender is not giving up. It is not apathy. It is not shrinking back.
It is open-handed living.
It is releasing what was never yours to carry, and trusting the God who actually can. It is learning to live within your capacity instead of striving beyond it. It is being intentional and interruptible. It is staying rooted in relationship with the Lord instead of in your own performance.
If you have been feeling the weight of self-reliance lately…this month is for you.

April’s Journal Prompts
Focus for April
This month’s journal prompts and daily Bible verses are about surrendering self-reliance and striving.
We will notice where we are gripping tightly. We will practice unclenching our fists. We will explore what it means to trust Jesus with outcomes, limits, interruptions, and even our own capacity.
As Easter approaches, we remember that surrender is not weakness. It is the way of Christ. He entrusted Himself to the Father. He laid down control. He opened His hands.
And because of the resurrection, surrender is never the end of the story.
It is the doorway into deeper relationship.
April 1
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, ESV)
Where have you been leaning heavily on your own understanding lately? What might it look like to shift your energy toward trust instead?
April 2
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” (Psalm 37:5, ESV)
Write about something you keep trying to manage or fix. What would it look like to truly commit it to the Lord instead of revisiting it mentally all day?
April 3
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” (Exodus 14:14, ESV)
Where are you trying to fight a battle God never asked you to fight? What might your actual role be?
April 4
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.” (Psalm 55:22, ESV)
List the specific burdens you are carrying right now. Which ones are within your control? Visualize (or draw stick figures) of you handing the others to the Lord in an act of trust.
April 5
“Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)
What emotions came up for you as you read that verse? (Defensive? Relief? Frustration? Gratitude?) Why?
April 6
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV)
Where do you feel weak or like you’re messing up a lot right now? How might your weakness be an opportunity for God’s power to be shown?
April 7
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” (Psalm 37:7, ESV)
What feels urgent in your life right now? What would it look like to practice stillness instead of scrambling?
April 8
“Teach me your way, O Lord.” (Psalm 86:11, ESV)
Are you asking God to teach you His way, or are you mostly asking Him to endorse your current plan?
April 9
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9, ESV)
Where have your plans shifted unexpectedly? How have you seen God establishing your steps in surprising directions?
April 10
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10, ESV)
In what area of your life are you striving to prove yourself? What might humility look like there?
April 11
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:15, ESV)
Notice where you feel tension versus peace. How might peace be guiding you away from over-carrying?
April 12
“Search me, O God, and know my heart.” (Psalm 139:23, ESV)
Is there a hidden fear underneath your striving? Name it. Invite God into it.
April 13
“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15, ESV)
What makes rest feel unsafe or unproductive to you? Where did you learn that?
April 14
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8, ESV)
How can you shift your focus from fixing your circumstances to deepening your relationship with the Lord today?

April 15
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)
What feels heavy right now? How might Jesus offer you rest, even in the midst of an “unfixed” situation?
April 16
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you.” (Isaiah 26:3, ESV)
Where does your mind tend to spiral? What thought boundary can you lay to keep your thoughts stayed on the Lord when they start to drift?
April 17
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6, ESV)
What could Spirit-dependence look like for you today?
April 18
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46, ESV)
As Easter approaches, reflect on Jesus’ surrender on the cross. What does it stir in you about your own need to entrust yourself to the Father?
April 19
“He who did not spare his own Son… how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32, ESV)
Where are you doubting God’s generosity or goodness? How does the cross and resurrection speak into that fear?
April 20
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” (John 14:27, ESV)
What kind of peace have you been trying to manufacture on your own? How is Christ’s peace different?
You may want to sit longer in John 14, exploring Peace for Troubled Hearts: Finding Comfort in John 14.
April 21
“Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, ESV)
Write a specific list of anxieties. Then imagine placing each one into open hands.
If you need help clearing mental clutter first, try a simple brain dump.
April 22
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1, ESV)
Where are you operating from scarcity instead of trust? Pray for the Lord to help you experience, see, and feel the safety and contentment in “I shall not want” today.
April 23
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” (Psalm 127:1, ESV)
Where are you building something in your own strength? Invite God into the foundation.
April 24
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7, ESV)
Where are you demanding visible proof before you will rest? What might walking by faith look like here?
April 25
“Set your minds on things that are above.” (Colossians 3:2, ESV)
Notice what dominates your mental space. Are your thoughts aligned with truth, or driven by fear?
April 26
“He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:3, ESV)
Where does your soul feel worn from striving? What rhythms help you receive restoration instead of pushing through?
April 27
“Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand.” (Philippians 4:5, ESV)
Are you gentle with yourself when you hit your limits? What would gentler self-talk look like?
If shame has been tangled into your striving, read over Listen to Guilt, Get Rid of Shame.
April 28
“The Lord upholds all who are falling.” (Psalm 145:14, ESV)
Where do you feel like you are barely holding things together? How might God be the One holding you?
April 29
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18, ESV)
Where are you carrying responsibility that goes beyond “so far as it depends on you”? Release what is not yours.
If this resonates, reflect on Intentional and Interruptible.
April 30
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13, ESV)
Looking back over this month, where have you loosened your grip? Have you noticed your trust in the Lord deepening?
A Blessing for April
May this month gently loosen the places where you have been gripping too tightly.
May your hands open, not in defeat, but in trust.
May you learn the quiet freedom of living within your capacity, receiving your limits as invitations into deeper dependence on God.
As you remember Christ’s surrender and celebrate His resurrection, may you find courage to entrust yourself fully to the Father.
And may wholehearted surrender draw you not into passivity, but into deeper relationship, steadier peace, and the kind of faith that rests because it knows who holds it.
