The space between hearing a great Bible Study and heading back out into the world is an important moment. A wise Bible Study leader knows that all believers need grace from the Spirit to be able to take what they’ve just heard and apply it to their outside lives.

This reality is the precise reason that Bible Study closure should be marked by prayer.

A thoughtful closing prayer is important both to acknowledge our need for the Spirit’s accompaniment in our lives as we head out, as well as to give honor and gratitude for the time we’ve spent as a small community in His Word.

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” We need the grace of God to enable us to go out into the world and apply the lessons just learned in Bible Study.

1. A Short Prayer To Close Bible Study

Whether your Bible Study listeners are new to God’s Word or came through the door as a seasoned, devout, long-time believer, the need for each of them on the way out the door remains the same: to remain in Him.

John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” As Bible Study comes to a close, take a moment and ask the Lord to enable the listeners to abide with Him during the week and apply what they have learned from His Word to their everyday lives.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the time spent together in Your Word, and for each person present here today. Only You know the unique needs that each of us faces in our lives, as well as the unique ways that You’ve made us to contribute to the world and our community.

So now Lord, we ask You to minister to each of those needs and equip us for our callings as we leave this place.

As we go out today, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would show us ways to apply the lesson we’ve learned here today and that our new knowledge will be a blessing to those we interact with. I pray that in Your grace our minds would comprehend it, and our hearts would grow in it, and then Lord, let our hands model it.

We love You Lord, and we trust You in all areas of our lives. We ask that You would grace each person here and bless them. Let this time of hearing the Word be fruitful in our lives, we pray. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

2. A Prayer For God’s Guidance & Wisdom

As a believer, there are innumerable situations in this world where we find ourselves particularly in great need of God’s guidance and wisdom. Although our need is always great, it is in times of challenge that we really notice the gap between the knowledge we presently possess and the Godly guidance and wisdom that we desire.

James 1:5 boldly tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” This verse is more than just a comfort, this is a promise of God–and one that we should be eager to receive.

Wise God,

We come to You now with hearts hungry for Your Wisdom. Our surrounding circumstances leave us with the sobering awareness that we do indeed need You every hour.

We come to You, gracious Lord, as a collective group with open minds, asking for guidance in the midst of the world’s confusion. You, Oh Lord, hold the keys to life and godliness.

Lord, as we leave this place and walk back out into our roles, loves and responsibilities, would You lead us in guidance and wisdom. Be our Guide Holy Spirit; we don’t want the world’s trends for life hacks, success and prosperity.

No, Lord, we want Your wisdom, Your guidance. Oh, Lord, our hearts and minds are Yours, lead us now as You will. We are ready to receive what You have for us, Yes, Lord.

Guide us, Your people, and Be our loving Shepherd; Our Jesus. For is in His Name that we ask, Amen.

3. A Prayer For Them To Experience God More Intimately

Perhaps the greatest snag for the believer is the false satisfaction that one has “arrived” at their spiritual peak with God. Unless you are on your deathbed, leaving this world and passing to the next, (and even then!) God is always there, inviting You in closer, encouraging you to trust Him into new, deeper steps of faith.

Ideally, following a Bible Study, listeners will be motivated to spend quiet time on their own seeking to experience God more intimately. A loving gesture as a Bible Study leader is to pray on behalf of your group for each of those present to experience God more intimately.

Loving Father,

I come before You on behalf of the precious souls gathered here today. Each of them carries their own unique burdens, joys, and desires. We praise You because You know those details intimately, and we are inviting You to be King over all of it.

There is so much diversity here amongst us, yet one thing is so similar: we all need more of You. This includes the one here who has known You since she was 5, and the one here who is only just beginning to trust You today for the first time. We declare it Lord that we all want more of You.

Will You grace us Lord, with the kindness of experiencing Your Spirit more intimately? More of You, Lord, more of You! Give us an awareness of Your callings, Your purposes, Your movement, Your answers. We want to be in on what You are doing and to experience You in our big and small moments.

Give us the capacity to obey You, and the courage to follow up on the gentle leadings that You might put on our hearts and consciences. We ask all of this in Your Name, Jesus. Amen.

4. A Blessing For Your Bible Study Group

Since ancient times, God’s leaders have spoken blessings over the people. In the Old Testament, The Lord gave Moses specific instructions for how to train Aaron and his sons (who were the priests) to bless the people.

The Lord says, in Numbers 6:23-26, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

This spoken blessing is a God-given foundation for speaking a blessing over a crowd. As believers, these sacred verses are a rich piece of our heritage and represent a legacy from God Himself of the posture He desires for a leader to have toward the congregation.

If ever you are unsure how to pray a blessing over a group of people, it will always be beneficial to return to Numbers 6: 23-26 and remember the specific elements of blessing spoken over the Israelites all those centuries ago, for in them is richness for our time as well.

Dear God, Giver of all good and perfect gifts,

We come to You now acknowledging and praising You for we are aware that every taste of this world that is good and sweet is from Your loving hand.

Oh, Lord. Bless this community–Your people. Nurture and grow each of them, Lord. Answer their prayers with abundance, gaze on each of them and give them security of heart, purpose, and deep fellowship with You and with each other.

We open our hands now to You, in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

5. A Prayer for Deeper Community amongst Participants

It’s a feeling that most Bible Study leaders experience: I hope that this group will become a tight knit group of friends, that they’ll be comfortable together, and that the community atmosphere here would be refreshing.

This longing can feel out of reach if the participants are not close with one another. However, for a community that is tightly bonded, the inevitable waves and trials of grief and hardship in this life will be much more survivable.

Bible Study participants have a unique opportunity to not only enlighten one another through discussion but also to rally around each other as they apply the lessons of the study to their lives in real time.

This can be a deep well of common ground and team-mindedness for Bible study groups if the Lord will tie their hearts and lives to one another.

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:10

King Jesus,

We gather today as Your people. We thank You for Your Word and this time that we have spent together here today.

I pray for each of those here in this spiritual circle today that You would bring about a deepening community for us. Bond us ever closer to You and to one another. I pray that rich friendships would develop here as a result of being in Your Word here together.

I pray against all the things that the enemy might use to try to divide us. We need one another, and we need relationships marked by the love of Jesus. Help us to be emotionally and practically invested in each other’s welfare and to cheer with one another, as well as to walk alongside each other in times of hardship.

We ask all of these things knowing that You are the most faithful Friend, our Jesus. It is in Your Name that we pray, Amen.
