Your Amazon Echo can help you lose weight by supporting you in your weight loss journey with a healthy diet and exercise when you give Alexa these commands.
We just got an Echo as a wedding present from Adam’s best friend (such a fun idea that wasn’t even on our registry!) and I am already in love.
I use it daily now, mostly for cooking timers and music.
Did you know you can create multiple timers at once like a broccoli timer, a fish timer, and a pasta timer?!
I use that feature all. the. time.
And I love that I don’t have to leave my bed to ask her to play good morning music to help me wake up (because I am NOT a morning person and I need all the help I can get).
But did you know there are also all kinds of ways Alexa can help you lose weight?
I’ve only just begun exploring all of her features.
You can definitely use Alexa without an Amazon Prime membership, but some of the features are limited (like your Alexa won’t be able to access any music from the Prime music library). You can sign up here for a free prime 30-day trial to see if you like it.
Now, let’s get into how your Amazon Echo can help you lose weight!
How the Echo Can Help You Eat A Healthy Diet
From what I can tell, Alexa already has basic nutrition information built-in and ready to go. You can ask her questions like,
- “Alexa, how many calories are in one slice of pepperoni pizza?”
- “Alexa, how much fiber is there in one serving of baby carrots?”
- “Alexa, how many grams of carbohydrates are there in one serving of whole wheat spaghetti?”
When you are trying to lose weight, you are often jumping into a world of new foods you haven’t eaten or prepared much before, which is especially true for fresh produce.
Alexa can always answer some basic questions like
- “Alexa, can I freeze leftover quinoa?”
But if you really want to broaden her knowledge to help you in this area, you can enable the skill, Save the Food, and you will be able to ask her questions like:
- “Alexa, ask Save the Food how to store asparagus.”
- “Alexa, ask Save the Food if wilted celery is okay to eat.”
- “Alexa, ask Save the Food if my avocado is still good.”
Tracking Your Water
Drinking water is so important when you’re trying to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, but it’s hard to stay hydrated when we have no idea how much water we’ve been drinking.
There are all kinds of apps, journals, and even water bottles to help you track your water, and Alexa can help, too.
Enable the skill Water Log, and you will be able to tell your Echo:
- “Alexa, tell Water Log to add 8oz of water.”
- “Alexa, ask Water Log how much water I’ve consumed today.”
- “Alexa, ask Water Log how much I drank yesterday.”
How the Echo Can Help You Exercise
The 7-Minute Workout
If you only have a few minutes in your schedule (or a few minutes of motivation), you can get a good workout in only 7 minutes. Just say:
- “Alexa, start the 7-Minute Workout”
She takes you through jumping jacks, wall sits, push-ups, abdominal crunches, chair step-ups, squats, tricep dips, and a plank for a full-body workout in the comfort of your own home.
The 5-Minute Plank
If your eyes are bugging out at just the thought of a 5-minute plank, hold on a second! When you enable The 5-Minute Plank Skill and say:
- “Alexa, start 5-Minute Plank”
This is the routine that starts:
60 sec – full plank
30 sec – elbow plank
20 sec – raised leg plank (each leg)
30 sec – side plank (each side)
30 sec – full plank
30 sec – elbow plank
10-sec rest after each set
If 60 seconds is too long for you, hold it as long as you can, then drop down to your knees. Just do the best you can and work up to longer times for each plank variation.
Connect to Your Fitbit
- “Alexa, ask Fitbit how well I slept last night.”
- “Alexa, ask Fitbit how I’m doing today.”
- “Alexa, ask Fitbit much water I’ve had today.”
- “Alexa, ask Fitbit how many active minutes I’ve had today.”
You don’t need any skills enabled at all for Alexa to access Prime music. Just say,
- “Alexa, play music workout music”
She will start playing some high-energy music for you to exercise to, but honestly? I kind of hate the typical techno-style workout music. You can always create a playlist of your favorite workout songs that she will play for you, as well.
The Alexa Timer
I am addicted to Alexa timers and they are really useful for your workouts, too.
You can set the timers to fit your unique fitness level and increase them as you get more fit.
Time exercises like planks, wall sits, or any kind of HIIT or tabata style workout.
Write your own workout and set a timer for each exercise.
Timers are a great way to see what your current fitness level is and they help give you tangible ways to set goals to move forward.
You may only be able to do a 20-second plank today, but if you increase by 1 second a day, you can steadily increase your strength!
- “Alexa, set a plank timer for 30 seconds.”
- “Alexa, set a wall sit timer for 1 minute.”
