8 Prayers for a Breakup

1. Prayer to Mend Your Heart
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
Gracious God,
I know that the state of my heart and mind are not unknown to You. Though my heart feels as though it may never recover, I know that You are not only able to comfort my heart, but mend it back together again.
There are so many feelings that I’m going through. There is a unique kind of hurt that comes with being so close to someone, and once it’s all over, they become like a stranger to you again. I don’t know what my life is going to look like moving forward, but I ask that You would be with me every step of the way.
On the days when I feel isolated, and lonely, I ask that You would comfort me, and remind me that You are close to the broken-hearted and that You save those who are crushed in spirit.
My prayer is that You will be near to me during this time, Lord. Please fix my eyes, and my thoughts on You, and the things from above. Help me to hold onto You as my hope, and my ultimate treasure. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
2. Prayer for Strength
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
Lord,
There is nothing like losing a relationship that once was so important to You, to remind you that even when you lose everything, if you have Christ, you have all you need. Today I am especially in need of this reminder, to give me strength as I go through this breakup.
My heart feels very frail, and I am struggling to feel anything but pain. Please help me to look to You for the strength that I need to heal from this heartache. Help me to trust in You, and know that there is hope for the future in Christ, no matter how my plans turn out.
Please help me to lean on Your strength in times of weakness, and be filled with hope and joy through Your Holy Spirit. Your Word says that those who hope in You will renew their strength.
I ask that You would renew my strength, and give me the courage to face each new day that lies ahead. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
3. Prayer for Healing
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.” – 2 Corinthians 1:3
Father,
Thank You for always being there for me. It doesn’t matter how dark the night gets, or how deep the pain goes, You not only care for me, but You are there waiting for me with arms open.
Now more than ever, I am in need of Your healing hands to heal my broken heart. I know that I don’t have to go through this on my own, but sometimes it can feel as though I am all by myself.
Remind me that You are not only a good Father to me, but that You are the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Where else could I turn to find consolation and peace? Thank You, God, for Your compassion.
I ask that You wrap my hurting heart around with Your compassion and kindness. Please bind up the wounds of my heart, and heal the pain that I am suffering from. Help me to find peace with the end of this chapter, and look to You for what lies ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. Prayer for the Future
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
Lord,
I am so grateful to know You, and for the reminder that all things are in Your hands. Sometimes life can feel so unpredictable, and the times of heartache or suffering can feel as though it has no end to it, or is in vain.
But I’m reminded through Your word that in all things You work for the good of those who love You, who have been called according to Your purpose. In all things, in this breakup, in the brokenness, You work it all together.
I know the plan that I had in mind for my life is nothing compared to what Your will is. No matter what that looks like, help me to submit myself to You, and to trust Your wisdom, and goodness.
Please help me to trust You with the future of my romantic relationships, and to seek You above all things, knowing that everything else will be added after, if it is in Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
5. Prayer for God’s Peace
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27
Lord,
There are so many emotions rushing through my heart and mind each day. The questions of why, or what if, and whether the right decision was made. The fearful thoughts of the future and what it will hold. Trying to think of where I will be, and who I will be with at the end of it all.
I know that none of this is in my control and that You ultimately have a plan for my life. Please help me not to fret over a future that I don’t know, or cannot control. Help me place my trust in You, Your time, and Your ways.
Please remove the anxiety filled thoughts from my mind, and help me to fix my mind on Your word. May Your word drown out all the fearful thoughts, and fill my mind with peace.
Your Word says that You have left me with peace, and given me Your peace. Not the peace that the world gives, but true peace, that rids my heart from anxiety and fear. Please fill me with that kind of peace, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
6. Prayer for When You Feel Weary
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
Father,
I don’t know where to begin. I feel so worn out and weary. My eyes have cried so many tears, and my heart feels as though it has been torn into two. I don’t know where else to turn but to You.
I come to You with nothing but a tired broken heart. I ask that You would help me to find rest in Your presence, and to find peace in Your comforting Word.
This breakup has taken so much energy and hope out of me. And it is so easy to sit in that, and allow it to drown out the truth of Your Word. Please help me to take You at Your word, and to seek Your face. In Jesus’ name, amen.
7. Prayer for God’s Guidance
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” – Proverbs 16:9
Lord,
I need You. I realize now in the wake of this breakup that it is so easy to make plans in life, and get attached to them. Yet, those plans can so easily be flipped on their head, and leave us feeling confused or hopeless.
It hasn’t been easy at all to come to terms with the end of this relationship. Some days I forget that there is so much to look forward to, and that the hurt will not always stick around.
You are the one who establishes my steps, and whose plans for my life will come to pass. Please help me not to lean on my own understanding, or set my heart on things that may not be a part of Your plan.
Help me to trust in You, and to commit my desires, thoughts, and plans to You, knowing that You are the one who guides me, and shows me the way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
8. Prayer to Move On
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
Father,
I come before You laying down the overwhelming burden of heartbreak, and the fear of what lies beyond this familiar relationship.
It’s hard to imagine that I could truly start over, and learn to live a life that doesn’t include them in the way it used to. Yet, I know that things don’t work out sometimes, and that is okay.
Please help me to be grateful for the times we had together, and the lessons that I have learned. Help me not to live in the past, and to dwell on it so much.
Help me to move on, not from this relationship to another, but to move past the stage of what could have been or what if’s. Please help me to come to terms with the end of this journey, and to trust You with all that lies ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
