Prayers For Foster Parents
1. A Prayer In The Wait For A Foster Placement
“Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”
Isaiah 65:24
Lord, as I lay my hands on this baby mattress, I want to pray a blessing over the child who will, please Jesus, find sanctuary here. Lord, whatever is happening in this child’s life that leaves them exposed to the elements, Oh, God of the angel armies, will you rescue them. Provide them safe passage to my arms.
My Abba Father, and ultimate Provider of care, show me how to love like You. Show me how to love with abandonment. Help me to silence the well-meaning voices around me who warn of the heartbreak ahead if I follow You down this road. Lord, I declare this day, this moment, there is no greater more worthy cause to break my heart in two than this mission right here. Lord, I receive it.
As I prepare this space and this home, won’t you prepare my heart? Cultivate the soil of my heart, and that of my spouse’s, and Oh, Lord: my children’s. We. Will. Trust. You.
Help me when I feel afraid of all the what if’s. I don’t want my faith to be built on the false foundation of perceived control. Move me to a place where the scarier thing becomes being outside of your calling. I know that my answer, my obedience, is a piece of your answer to this baby who will soon cry out with wordless pleas.
Intervene in their suffering Lord, bring them to me, your servant is ready to look this child in the face and whisper of your faithfulness. Oh Lord, match me to this child, minister your security to them through my hands.
2. A Prayer for Bio Family
“Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings”
Isaiah 58:12
Great and mighty Restorer, Most High God.
As always you can do anything you want, we look to you now Lord and intercede on behalf of bio parents and siblings. Oh, Lord. God, restore this family. I can not imagine the pain that they are going through, but I know that this is not your design.
Lord, will you lift these parents from shame and defeat to honor and victory. Lord, give them the strength to walk away from these addictions, Lord provide a way, restore them, even as Your Word tells us that You will be called Repairer of Broken Walls. Yes, Lord. Today, even now, Oh Lord, restore.
I pray for community and support for these parents. Lord, provide for them, bring them into contact with resources and individuals to strengthen them, and empower them to turn their lives around. Ultimately God, and more than anything, help them receive the gospel. The gospel is what transforms, activate their hearts to receive it, and to be transformed.
I pray for precious bio siblings. Innocent sufferers. Lord, provide a home for them to stay together. I pray for connection, for supernatural provision, for a remnant of childhood memories that are sweet.
I pray for comradery with one another, and closeness. Lord, thank you that they have one another, please let nothing come between that bond. Protect their hearts and minds during this hard time, and Oh sweet Jesus, bless and keep them.
3. A Prayer for a Foster Child’s Future
“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.”
Psalm 39:7
Heavenly Father,
hold my fragile heart as I hold this baby. I love him as if he were my own flesh and blood, yet I know that I have zero authority over his future. As I send these prayers up to you like arrows, I pray that you would cause them to land over and over again throughout his lifetime.
Thank you for giving us the courage to say yes to this, for that yes has been the gateway to a deep well of joy and purpose. Thank you, Lord, for preserving the life of this most precious child and for giving him safe passage to my arms. Lord, when my arms no longer surround him I pray that this love you’ve given me for him will always be a part of him, even if he never remembers me.
It was never supposed to be about me to begin with. It’s always been about You. It’s always been about You bringing peace on earth. Lord, I will cherish for all of my lifetime this privilege of being your vehicle of Peace to this darling one.
I shoot up an arrow of prayer for his childhood. Keep him physically safe from harm and evil. I know Your heart for the vulnerable, bring your awesome covering of protection and grace. I shoot up an arrow of prayer for his spouse and future generations that will come about because of him.
Let this cycle of destruction and pain end here. Give him victory in life and success in education, and emotional intelligence in relationships. I shoot up an arrow of prayer for close relationships for him. Even now, this time in my home, let it be skills for his future of how to express love and be loved.
Give him the victory, Lord. But Lord, more than anything, let him know you. For it is in You that we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). I pray that any thing the devil meant for harm in his sweet life, that you would take it and redeem it as a powerful force of peace in this world.
This child is Yours, and there is no safer place than in Your hands.
4. A Prayer On Court Days
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
Psalm 91:2
my God, in whom I trust.”
Lord,
Court days are so hard. So much is out of our control as we watch decisions made for this child by people who don’t know them and love them as we do.
Protect this child from all evil and all harm. Fight for them in all of the ways they can’t fight for themselves.
Allow the truth to be abundantly clear to every lawyer, judge, and decision-maker in the courtroom. Give them the wisdom to make the best decisions for this child to have a safe, secure, healthy future.
Bless these people who show up in the courtroom day in and day out to see and hear so much brokenness, but prevent their hearts from being calloused or weary. Allow them to care deeply for each and every child in the courtroom, knowing how vulnerable it is to have the important decisions of their lives left in others‘ hands.
Allow today’s decisions to be just and in Your will.
In Jesus’ all-powerful name, I pray. Amen.
5. A Prayer For God To Rise Up More Foster Parents
“He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Luke 10:2
Oh, great Lord of the harvest,
You know well the crisis for homes for the children. Look at the city, the community, children everywhere in need of homes. Children being “shipped” to other cities, forced to change schools, and separated from their bio-siblings because of lack of homes.
Meanwhile, we are told of the boom of the housing market. Neighborhoods and beautiful homes going up all over our state. Holy Spirit, send out the workers. Awaken the workers. Call your people. Plant courage into the hearts of the future workers. Give them the bravery to say, yes.
Provide for the children Lord. I pray not just for foster homes; but precious Jesus, I pray first for mentoring and resources for young, vulnerable parents. Open our hearts and homes and communities to those less fortunate than us.
To whom much is given much is required (Luke 12:48), let us happily open our doors. Holy Spirit, light up the hearts of those who You would have participate in this expression of the gospel.
And for those whose hearts You’ve already lit up, but perhaps do not yet have the resources to step into this, I ask that you provide the means.
Provide the homes for the homeless. Provide the beds for the children in need of comfort and rest. Provide the tables for meals spent laughing and finding solace from the pain of the world.
Provide every need for those who are ready and willing to take in a child. In all things, give us the grace to trust You and to look to you.
It is because of Jesus that we have the faith, belief, and the access to open our hands to receive these things, and it is in That Name we pray, Amen.
