Children are a blessing, and that is not simply my personal opinion. It is only one of the truths we find in God’s word concerning little ones.

Scripture is filled with instruction to both parents and children, and teaches us not only how God views and cares for children. But He also gives parents a guide that helps them to raise children in a way that leads them on the path of life long after they have left the nest.

These 14 Bible verses about children provide invaluable wisdom for both parents and children and remind us of God’s love for them.

Psalm 127:3

“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.“

One of the best commentaries I have heard on this scripture is from Spurgeon. “He gives children, not as a penalty nor as a burden, but as a favor. They are a token for good if men know how to receive them, and educate them. They are ‘doubtful blessings’ only because we are doubtful persons.”

When scripture describes children as a heritage from the Lord, it is referring to them as gifts from our Heavenly Father. As gifts, parents have the great honor and responsibility to take care of them, educate them, love them, and lead them in the truth.

Mark 10:13-16

“People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them, and blessed them.“

We get to see a sliver of Jesus’ interaction with little ones. It is clear to see that He was not an adult who shooed away the children, instead. He welcomed them, teaching us that there is much we can learn from them.

This passage is a reminder to parents not to be the cause of hindrance that keeps their children from the Lord. Instead, walk with them, talk with them, show them what a relationship looks like through the example that you set.

Psalm 8:1-2

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.“

How wonderful is this image? The glory of the Lord is not only revealed in heaven and earth. David now looks at the fact that God’s power can even be seen in children, as His strength is shown in them.

This is a reminder to 1 Corinthians 1:27 that God chooses what seems weak to the world to put to shame the things that are mighty. He is able to appoint strength out of the mouths of children and infants.

Proverbs 29:17

“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.“

The theme of discipline and correction is common throughout Proverbs. This scripture encourages parents to correct their children and be the ones to teach them.

If we let the world, or their peers teach them, it will be to their detriment and lead to ongoing strife, leaving no room for peace. But in doing the tough but loving work of discipline, we not only give them a solid foundation but reap the harvest of peace that comes with raising a wise child.

Ephesians 6:4

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.“

Children need encouragement, just like we do. In fact, they need encouragement from their parents more than they need from anyone else. Parents have the ability to provoke their children to wrath through being over-critical and unkind words and actions that torment them instead of leading them on the right path.

Though this passage is applicable to both parents, Paul speaks especially to fathers, encouraging them not to neglect their role as spiritual examples and their responsibility to teach their children.

Psalm 139:15-16

“My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.“

This beautiful verse shows us the extent of God’s knowledge and care for little ones. David reflects upon God’s knowledge of him even before he was born, even before he was formed, the Lord both knew him and saw him.

But that’s not where it ends. He even looked after the days that followed, and knew his days as if they were written in a book. In the same way, He not only cares for your child before they are born, but for their days after.

Proverbs 22:6

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.“

The Lord has created the parent-child relationship in such a way that the parent not only allows the child to grow up without structure, but that they set out a certain training that leads children to choose the path of life as opposed to that of foolishness. And as they are taught, they will remain on that road, even if they turn for a season, they will return and not depart from it.

3 John 1:4

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.“

John describes his greatest joy, to see his children walking in the truth. He is not speaking of biological children, but spiritual children, those who he taught and disciplined.

What greater joy is there for any parent to see their children walk in the instruction and truth that they were taught? Not out of moral obligation or fear, but truly walking and living it out as their own.

John 16:21

“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.“

Just like child-birth, there may be painful and frustrating times that you experience as a parent, yet the joy of having that child and being entrusted as their parents exceeds the hard times.

They are our consoling when times are tough, and a reminder that children are worth it because they are a blessing from the Lord.

Psalm 127:4-5

“Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.“

In this Scripture, children are considered to be as arrows in the hands of a warrior. In many ways, they need to be formed, guided, taken care of, and must be given direction or an aim in life.

They have the potential to do harm or to do good. Those who are fortunate enough to have a quiver full of children get to experience them as God’s blessing.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

“These commandments that I give you today are to be in your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Many of these scriptures refer to children in relation to their parents. It is once again a reminder of the wonderful privilege and weighty responsibility God gives when entrusting parents with a child.

The best way children are taught is through learning from our example. As we impress God’s word in our hearts and live it out, we can not only teach our children to do so, we can show them.

Proverbs 1:8-9

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.“

Just as parents are instructed to teach their children the way they should go, children are encouraged to give ear to the wise instruction of their parents. Like a crown on their head, the wisdom they receive from their parents will be as a reward to them.

1 Samuel 1:27

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.“

Was there a moment you remember praying to the Lord for a child? Let those prayers continue in their lives today. When you are weary, when it becomes tough, turn to Him in prayer, because the One who answered your prayer is able to do that again. Never cease to pray over their lives. They need it more than you know.

Ephesians 6:1-3

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—”so that it may go well with you, and that you may enjoy a long life on the earth.”“

Last, but not least. God’s word to children takes us back to the beginning pages of Scripture. God desires for children to live in a respectful relationship with their parents.

The reason this commandment stands out above the others is that it is the only one with a promise attached to it, “so that it may go well with you and you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

As parents teach their children in a gentle but diligent way, children are even better able to respond in honor and appreciation for their direction in their lives.
