11 Prayers For A Baby With Colic {& Parents, Too!}

| |

A baby with colic is exhausting for babies and parents. Say these prayers for an extra boost of comfort, peace, patience, and encouragement.

There is no denying that dealing with colic is rough (and “rough” doesn’t even begin to capture the magnitude of difficulty).

Because there is no known cause of colic (or there are a variety of things that might be a cause), parents can end up feeling frustrated, discouraged, and hopeless.

I was one of them.

If you have tried all the colic drops, probiotics, belly huggers, drunk the colic-relieving teas, read all the colic books, and are still left disheartened with an inconsolable baby, you’re in the right place.

You hate to see your baby in colicky pain but you have tried all the things and nothing works (and you’re utterly exhausted). You may not have found the magic solution to soothe your colicky baby but there is one tool that is always in your arsenal – prayer.

It doesn’t feel good at all (in fact, you might feel weak and maybe even like a failure as a parent – lies!), but leaning on Jesus in the midst of our struggles is the one thing that can allow God’s power the opportunity to work through our weakness.

Prayer can be a lifeline in our most desperate moments and the best source of comfort, encouragement, and peace (things parents of colicky babies are sorely lacking!).

When your baby is screaming inconsolably for 2 hours straight, when you are up with them in the middle of the night again for the 5th time, or when you are at your wits end – seek the Lord in prayer.

Your prayers don’t have to be fancy (even our groans count, thanks to the Holy Spirit!) and you don’t have to think hard – that’s why we wrote the prayers for you! Write them down, print them out, and post them in your nursery as a source of encouragement.

You are not alone. This is a season that WILL end. You are the very best parent for your baby.

When you’ve tried ALL. THE. THINGS, prayer is the very best gift you can give to your colicky baby (and yourself!).

Prayers For A Baby With Colic

Begging For Wisdom

God,

Science may not know the cause of colic but I know You do. You knit their little body together perfectly so You know exactly what they need right now.

I’m doing absolutely everything I can think of to soothe, calm, and comfort them but there has to be something else. Will you please give me wisdom in knowing what they need and how to best respond to them right now?

I’m trying my best but I need your help. In Your name I pray,

Amen.

Seeking Comfort For Your Crying Baby

Heavenly Father,

I’m doing everything I know to do right now, but I can see that something is still making my baby uncomfortable. I don’t know whether it’s a food sensitivity, a digestive problem, a high sensitivity to the new world around them, or something else altogether.

You are our Ultimate Comforter and I ask that You comfort my child when I cannot, as well as comforting my own heart. It’s so hard to hear my baby cry and not be able to fix it!

In Your Son‘s name I pray, Amen.

Asking For Peace

Lord,

The symptoms of colic are so rough. Our house has been filled with sleepless nights, hours upon hours of screaming, and anxiety and frustration.

We are all craving the peace that only You can offer – a peace that passes all understanding. Even if the colic continues, I pray that Your peace will be bigger than the symptoms and allow all of us to experience a divine sense of calm.

Amen.

Pleading For Healing For A Baby With Colic

God,

The doctors say there is nothing medically wrong with my baby, but there has to be a reason they are screaming, crying, and writhing uncontrollably. Whatever is going on in their little body, please please heal them. Give them relief from the pain and discomfort they are feeling.

Amen.

Asking For Sleep

God,

I am exhausted. I knew having a new baby would mean sleepless nights, but I had no idea that colic would bring so much anxiety from hearing phantom cries (on top of the real cries!), exhaustion from long days and nights of trying to soothe the baby, and worry that we are missing something that could calm them.

I want to be the best parent for my baby that I can be but that is incredibly hard to do when I am beyond sleep-deprived. I ask that you bring me the peace in Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety” and grant both me and my baby restful sleep.

Amen.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Seeking Patience

Lord,

I’m at my wit’s end. I love my child but I’m exhausted. My well of patience has run dry. I desperately want to be the best parent I can be to this little one but I feel like I have nothing left to give.

Please, Lord, grant me patience to weather this storm. I know it’s temporary but it feels nearly impossible just to survive another day right now.

Amen.

Asking For Strength

God, I know that Your power works in counterintuitive ways – when I am weak, You are strong.

Well, Lord, I feel about as weak as I ever felt, so I am fully depending on Your strength to come through for me right now. Please show up. Give me just enough strength as I need to get through another day.

You are always faithful and I know You are here with me. I need You more than ever.

Amen.

Wanting To Bond With My Baby

Lord,

I know You have given me this baby as a precious gift. All of the screaming and exhaustion of colic can make it really difficult to bond with this sweet child, but I so desperately want to connect with them and deeply cherish them.

Help me to love them unconditionally always, just as You love us, and for both of us to feel a strong relationship with each other.

Amen.

Praying For Rest

Lord,

I have never felt this tired before. It seems like we just can’t catch a break between long days and even longer nights. You made me the parent of this precious baby so I know You will be faithful in providing just enough rest for me to make it another day.

I pray that, like Psalm 23 describes, You lead me beside quiet waters and restore my soul.

Amen.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

he refreshes my soul.

Psalm 23:1-3

Asking To Be Surrounded By Support

God,

Having a colicky baby is so isolating. It’s so hard to go anywhere because I know they will just scream and cry and so few people understand how hard this really is. They say to “enjoy every moment” and “all babies cry,” but words like that don’t help.

Please bring people into my life who will validate how hard this is and encourage me right now. I am bone-tired and my mind is so fuzzy that I don’t even know what kind of help I need, but You do.

Will You please surround my family with people who will be able to offer us just the support we need to survive this season? Thank You so much for always taking care of us so well and for blessing us with the beautiful gift of community.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Praying For Joy

Almighty God,

I know that joy is one of the Fruits of the Spirit and I so desire to experience more. I know that the joy that comes from You is more than just the feeling of happiness and it is not dependent on the situation we are living in.

Help to seek that kind of joy, Father. I don’t feel joyful right now, but I know I can’t always depend on my feelings. Bless me with Your joy in the midst of this tough season.

Amen.

Fight Against Complaining

Lord,

Give me the right words to talk about this season we are in right now. As much as I would love to tell everyone that I am soaking up and enjoying every moment of parenthood, that’s just not the case right now.

Things are really, really hard. I don’t want to complain because I am so grateful for this precious little life that You have entrusted to me, but I need to be able to talk to people about my struggle to get support.

Please, give me the words that will allow me to share what I’m going through in a way that honors You and my baby.

I love you, Lord. Amen.
