3 Prayers To Comfort A Grieving Friend

| | |

Say these prayers to comfort a grieving friend in person, from afar, or in a card, asking for God’s peace and comfort to cover them in their grief.

There’s really nothing quite like watching a friend suffer with grief. No matter the loss, the pain is always deep and nauseatingly real. The dull, frustrating pain of being unable to restore the loss your friend has endured can be utterly excruciating.

Although we may feel truly helpless to deliver any comfort, it’s important to remember that our prayers are indeed very powerful; and because of the power of prayer, we are never truly helpless in our quest to promote comfort and support to a grieving friend.

If your heart is breaking today on behalf of a loved one experiencing grief, bring your sadness and requests to God knowing He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

Whether you are in-person, far away, or even the main companion of the bereaved, prayer will be a deep well to draw comfort.

We serve a God Who bends to listen, and Who cares for the burdens we carry.

1. A Spoken Prayer For Peace While in Person with a Grieving Friend

Father in Heaven,

As I lay my hand on my friend’s shoulder right now, I am just overwhelmed with pleas and desperation for You to comfort the aching heart of my dear friend. This loss is profound, Lord. Father, our hearts are heavy.

Oh, Lord, won’t You bring Your comfort? Your Word tells us that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted” (Matthew 5:4).

I pray that in this heartbreak, would You not only be near but Lord, please let my friend feel that nearness—God, we ask You for that. For an awesome, holy awareness of Your closeness to his/her broken heart.

We thank You for the gift of life that You blessed the world with for this time—short and abrupt as it feels. We look to You with tears in our eyes, trusting that You will be good to us.

And even as our hearts break to lose them, we also celebrate and thank You for who they were to us. God, hold my friend as he/she mourns this very sacred person in his/her life. Comfort them, Holy Spirit when the absence is so big and so wide.

I pray that You would fill my friend with the assurance that ______ *insert name of departed* is safe and at peace. You, Oh Lord, are the Giver of Life, and our desire is to be held by You.

Jesus, we want to trust You now, show us how to hang on–give us strength to hang on to Your promises with great faith, Lord.

Please give this community tenderness and deep empathy for my dear friend for this very difficult season of mourning ahead. I pray for sensitivity and kindness to surround my friend. Lord, let our hands be a vessel to him/her of Your love.

I thank You for my friend, and I pray for You to hold him/her now.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

2. Prayer for Comfort for an Out-of-State Grieving Friend

There is a distinct agony to being miles apart from a loved one who is experiencing loss. Being unable to be physically present can be so frustrating.

The desire yet restraint to being able to personally deliver a homemade meal, tidy a home, or give a hug can leave us feeling helpless.  If someone you love is far away and going through grief, turn to the Lord in prayer on their behalf.

Use the same energy that you would have liked to use with your friend to instead stir up the heavens with prayers on your friend’s behalf.

Consider calling or texting your friend a prayer, or sending them a handwritten prayer in a card.

Your care and prayers will speak volumes to your friend and provide you with the ability to still contribute toward their healing.

Oh, Lord…

I come before You today on behalf of my friend, ______. I pray for the heartache and the cruel wake of loss tearing through his/her life right now. Oh, Lord, would You provide comfort and peace as only You can.

Would You cradle his/her heart as this loss settles in? Lord, lift his/her chin as they look to You to put one foot in front of another.

Today my heart is breaking to be so far away from my friend during such a hard time in his/her life. My friend means so much to me, and I so wish I was in person right now.

I pray for the community that is local that You would give them deep insight to minister Your love and kindness to the needs of my friend. And then, Oh Lord, show me how to best support him/her from a distance.

Tune my heart with discernment and insight for how to comfort my friend. Lead me through whatever means You would: whether phone calls, texts, cards, meals ordered online, etc. Lead me through Your Holy Spirit in how to best sew in my love during this time.

Give my friend a profound awareness of the love and care that surrounds them. Let them be comforted with felt support and compassion. I pray for provision for each need that will come up during this time of mourning.

I pray for increased sensitivity and empathy from co-workers, and school/business during this time.

I ask You for space and clarity for my friend to grieve and mentally process all that has happened without the weight of external societal pressures; for space to experience the grief and healing.

Give my friend hope, Lord. Your Word says in Psalm 30:5 that, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” We look to You with great expectation that joy will come again. Yes, Lord.

We ask all of this in the Name of the God of all Comfort: Jesus, Himself.

Amen.

3. Prayer for My Own Heart while Comforting a Grieving Friend

When someone we love is grieving there is a secondary grief that sets in, and we can feel so broken ourselves. Compassion fatigue is a real experience, particularly if we are walking very closely to the one experiencing the loss firsthand.

If you are at a loss today carrying the sadness of someone you love, turn to God for his nurture, so that you in turn, also will have nurture to give.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Father in Heaven,

I come to You in this moment with a heavy heart. Watching my friend ache and suffer is breaking my heart. I feel crushed under the weight of reality and my inability to change anything about the loss.

Lord, if I am honest, I don’t even know how they will get through it. The grief is just so big and consuming. Lord, I turn to You as my only hope for comfort and peace for my friend. Oh, Lord, I beg You to show compassion to them!

Will You comfort me so that I can possess a comfort to share? I cannot do this without You. You are my refuge even as my heart hurts inside of me, I know that you see me. Please, Lord, give me the eyes of faith to receive it.

Father, will You give me the wisdom to discern the times that words are most appropriate from the times that quietly meeting a need is best. Holy Spirit, I need the insight to know how best to serve them. Give me the strength and energy to walk alongside them in this grief.

I pray for my own family and community. Help me to stay up to date on my responsibilities while I am doing so much for this family in crisis. Keep me from forgetting essential details on my responsibility list, so that I can effectively help them tend to theirs.

Dear Jesus, I am asking You for the same thing for myself that I’ve begged You to provide for my friend: rest. The grief is so exhausting, and I am amazed at how drained I feel. I ask for grace and stamina for both of us, Lord.

Show me how to take care of myself, even as I am taking care of my friend.

In Jesus Name,

Amen.

Note to the reader: If you are supporting a grieving person, know that you are going through a second-hand trauma, and your mental and emotional health is important to care for too. Your loving care is valuable, and you need support as well. Reach out to a friend or trained therapist if you find yourself struggling beyond your capacity.
