Prayers For A New Baby
A Prayer of Thanksgiving Inspired By Hannah
“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”
1 Samuel 1:27
Hannah was a woman who had a great longing for a child but found herself in a deeply discouraging situation. She was barren. She didn’t have a doctor to consult in the ways we have today, but she knew that she could bring her humble prayers to God, and that is what she did.
She prayed for this child, and promised to give Him back to God to serve Him. Her story, like many other women in scripture, is a testament to God who is able to make a way where there seems to be no way. These words are Hannah’s testimony and are true for those who have received the blessing of a new baby.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I just want to sing Your praises for how good You are. Thank You, Lord, that You have brought this baby into our lives. It wasn’t on my time, but Your time, and I can’t thank You enough.
I know that Your plans for this child far exceed those of my own. Please help me to open my hand to You, to allow Your word and wisdom to shape the life of this baby instead of my own opinions or understanding.

Proverbs 22:6
It is no secret that children are very impressionable. They say the things that they hear and they do the things that they see. The idea that children are too young to understand or to be affected by things is simply untrue.
The wisdom found in this verse instructs parents/caregivers to lead children on the right path from their youth, not only once they turn the legal age.
The idea of starting them off or training, as other translations word it, is an effort, time, and diligent commitment that parents are called to make toward their children. The way they should go is ultimately found in God’s word, which leads us onto the path of life, instead of that of destruction.

Lord, we are so blessed to have this new baby in our lives. Though they are still young, our emotions, actions, words, and interactions with them and one another set a standard for them.
There lies a big responsibility on us to lead this baby in Your truth. Help us not to fall away from it ourselves. Prepare us so that we can lead them wisely and lovingly.
I pray that You would go ahead of us, Lord, equipping us to train this baby with patience.
Would You continue to lead them all the days of their lives even when we are not around? May they turn to You, and find in You their fortress and their safety.

Lord, it truly blows my mind how a great God like You can look down at us humans, who fall so short of Your glory and yet You choose not only to love us but to use us.

You not only knew them beforehand but You also know the days of their lives that they are yet to live out. My prayer is that You would set this child apart for Your glory.
I pray that Your Holy Spirit would fill them even as a child and that You would direct their path in the gifting that You have placed in them. May they be a light for You in this world, Lord.

“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

This has always been an interesting verse to me. When it comes to introducing our children to Christianity or having meaningful conversations with them about faith, it can be easy to assume that they are too young to get it.
But here we see Jesus welcoming the little children and using them as an example of what our faith should look like. A faith that is childlike in its trust. Not only can we learn from our children but they can learn from us about Jesus.
Sometimes we can unknowingly hinder our children from the Lord. Let them see your faith, and learn from their faith that they often instinctively place on you, as a lesson about how God calls you to trust in Him.
Prayer
Lord, I thank You that You care for this baby’s life even more than I do.
It can sometimes be hard to imagine that anyone else could hold their lives as dear as their parents do, but the truth is that You care for them in ways that we cannot even understand ourselves.
Your care for them is a reminder to us that we can entrust them in Your hands. Even as young as they are now, Lord, my prayer is that You would help us lead them to Jesus as best as we can. Help us not to be a hindrance to them but rather a gateway to Christ.
Teach us to have teachable hearts and to learn from the innocent, devoted trust that our baby shows toward us. Let that trust run over into the way that we trust You, Lord.
