It can be easy to get lost in the busyness of wrapping and exchanging gifts, and preparing meals that we forget the real gift that we have received on this day. The birth of Christ, our King.

Though the season may be filled with activities, one of the best ways that we can bring our focus back to the reason for the season is through prayer. Whether you will be working, at home with family or friends, or even by yourself, you can offer these Christmas prayers to God.

Prayers for the Christmas Season

1. Prayer to Remember What Christmas Is All About – The Birth of our Savior

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

Gracious Father,

So many years ago, You sent Your only begotten Son into the world with a great mission on His mind. That mission meant that He would endure suffering, persecution, and eventual death, for our sake. For the sake of our sin.

Before the birth of Jesus, the world lay hopeless, with only doom awaiting us. But through Your sacrificial love, and mercy, You withheld what we truly deserved and gave Your Son instead.

As we celebrate Christmas, I know that there is a lot of excitement around gifts, food and decor. Many in the world celebrate Christmas, but do not celebrate Christ, who Christmas is all about.

I confess sometimes other things get in the way of what this day is really about. I ask that You would help us to refocus our hearts and minds and to remember what Christmas is about.

Remind us of our sin that was so heavy, that it took the perfect Son of God, who humbled Himself, and took on flesh, to take up our punishment for sin. If it were us, we would have been separated from You for eternity.

But because it was Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God, we get to have eternal life and to live at peace with You. Today, we want to thank You for Your

love and for the birth of Christ that has made this day what it is. Please help us to echo this message of hope, and life to those who are without it. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

2. Prayer of Praise to Our King on Christmas

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” – Zechariah 9:9

Lord,

There is none like You! No other king, beside You. Today, I want to praise You and lift You high for You are the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. How humbling it is that of all the ways that You chose to reveal Christ to us, it was through the form of a baby, who went through every stage of development as we did, and who grew strong in the Spirit, and in truth.

I am reminded of the joy that I get to experience today, the joy that comes with the knowledge that I have a humble King who came to earth, and led the life that I was meant to live, but couldn’t. A glorious King who was sinless, yet took upon Himself the sin of the world, that those who look to Him and trust in Him might be set free from the punishment of sin.

Thank You God for Christ the just, who has justified all those who have placed their faith in Him. Even as I celebrate Christmas, and remember what Christ has done, I ask that You would help me to become lowly and humble just as He is. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

3. Prayer to Remember That God Is With Us

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” – Isaiah 7:14

Heavenly Father,

I am so thankful that Your ways are not our ways and Your thoughts are not our thoughts. This Christmas, I am reminded of the wisdom of God in all things that You do. The notion that God would live among His people sounds like a far off thought for many cultures and beliefs. But this has always been Your desire since the garden, as You walked in the cool of the day with Adam.

This has been Your desire, since You promised the children of Israel that You would be their God and they would be Your people, and that You would make Your dwelling among them. And

now on Christmas, as we look back at the birth of Christ, it is even more clear that Christ is the fullness of this plan of Yours unfolding. Christ, who is Immanuel, God with us. Christ who lived among us, and who now lives within us.

Thank You so much for this life that we get to experience in Jesus, our Lord. Thank You for being with us, not only on joyous days like this but on days that are tough and that require hope. Thank You for being my hope on those days, and for making even the hardest of times meaningful.

Thank You God for sending Jesus, and thank You Jesus that You came. I pray all of this, in the matchless name of Jesus, amen.

4. Prayer of Thanks for All That Jesus Is To Us

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” – Isaiah 9:6-7

Lord Jesus,

Of all the precious children born, You are the most precious gift that the world has ever received. Though You are God, You made Yourself a substitute for us, by becoming like one of us, as You took on human flesh.

But unlike us, You are fully God and fully man. Today, we get to celebrate the greatest gift that a Child was born, and a Son was given to us. The Son who would save the world, and take upon Himself the sin of the world.

Thank You so much for Your sacrifice that paid my debt. Thank You for paying every last penny of my debt to sin. Though I owe nothing on that debt, I owe everything to You. You are not only our Savior, but You are so many more things to us. The only way I can possibly summarize it is by saying that You are all things to us.

Thank You Jesus for being our Wonderful Counselor who instructs us in the way we should go, and gives us both counsel and comfort. Thank You for being our Mighty God, whose strength cannot be overturned. Thank You for being our Everlasting Father. You are the perfect Father, in whose arms we can always turn to, and who loves us enough to correct us.

Thank You Jesus that You are our Prince of Peace, who not only has given those who trust in Your name peace with God for this present time but also for eternity. Thank You Jesus, for all that You are to me. May I never forget this but especially remember it today. In Your name, I pray, amen.

5. A Short Prayer for A Merry Christmas

Today I am filled with joy as I remember what this day is all about. Thank You for the peace, and comfort that this day brings. My prayer is that it would be a truly merry Christmas for those who have placed their faith in You, and for those who will hear the message of Christmas preached today.

May they be merry not because of gifts, but because of the ultimate gift that You have given us in Christ our King. May many people come to know and trust in You today. Please help us as Christians to share the joy of the gospel with those who have no hope, and to point them to Christ who is our hope.

May they know the love of God, and see the weight of the cross, and how it overcomes the weight of their sin. May they come to know Your Son as their Lord and Savior, and celebrate Christmas for what it truly means. In Jesus’ name, amen.
