5 Prayers About Death
Praying about death and finding the words can be hard. Here are five prayers about death to bring you peace, and comfort.
It can be hard to face the reality that everyone will experience death. This is especially sobering when we think of those who we love and cherish in life. As Christians, we have a glorious hope in Christ that reminds us that death is not the end and that we don’t have to fear it.
There is comfort in knowing that God has numbered each of our days and that nothing happens without His sovereignty ruling over it, even during the painful and grievous times of our lives. In Christ, nothing is in vain.
When our loved ones are going through an illness, are aging, or are suffering in a way that brings concern for their lives, and we feel helpless, we can always remember to pray.
We can pray not only for God to console our hearts, but for Him to strengthen, comfort, and draw our suffering loved ones closer to Himself.
If you’re struggling to find the words to pray, I hope that these prayers will bring you peace, and comfort.
5 Prayers About Death

1. Prayer for Victory Over Death
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Corinthians 15:55–57
Heavenly Father,
It’s so hard to see the one you love go through pain, and slowly approach the end of their earthly life. If there is anyone who knows suffering, it is Christ, because He took on our shame, and bruised for our transgressions.
But death wasn’t the end of His story. He rose again, triumphant over death. Now we who have died with Christ, have always risen with Him, and have everlasting life beyond our earthly life.
Thank You, God, for the victory over death that we have in Christ. Thank You that nothing can separate us from Your love, not even death itself. Please help us to hold onto Christ and His victory through this tough time, and as we face the reality of approaching death.
Please help us to look to Christ in hope, and not to fall back in fear over death. Remind us that the ultimate victory has already been won and that those who trust in Him have victory over death. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. Prayer for a Dying Loved One
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
Lord,
I just want to take a moment to thank You for the life of my loved one. Sometimes it’s so easy to take the presence of those in our lives for granted and forget that our time on earth is short, and so uncertain.
I am grateful that You blessed my life with their presence. As they draw closer to the end of their earthly life, my prayer is that You would enfold them with Your love, and mercy.
Please remove any fear that they are experiencing, and fill them with Your peace. Help us to remember that we have hope that stretches beyond the suffering of this world and that our hope is in Christ, who will one day make all things new.
Help us to remember that this isn’t the end of the road and that we will see one another again because our trust has been firmly placed in Jesus. If there is any uncertainty in my loved one’s heart, I ask that You would make Yourself known to them, and bring them into Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. Prayer to Come to Christ Before Dying
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26
Gracious God,
I know that there is no hope in life or death apart from You. Though I have turned away from You for many years, I am humbled that You have been so merciful toward me and welcome me into Your grace and love.
Though I am saddened that I did not spend my life for You, I know that while I am alive, while it is today, Your loving kindness is displayed towards me, and You have made a way for me in Christ.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking my sin upon Yourself and nailing it to the cross. Thank You for new life, even in death, and for the hope beyond this world.
I ask for Your forgiveness for my sin, and that You would reign as Lord in my heart. I believe that You are the Son of God, and that Your death and resurrection have brought victory over death, and eternal life to those who trust in You.
Please receive me as Your humble servant, and draw near to me, as I prepare myself to know You and see You soon in paradise. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
4. Prayer for Comfort for the Dying
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
Father,
Thank You for the gift of life. Though it is fragile, it is precious, and I am thankful for the life that You have given my loved one. It is hard to comprehend that they will not be here anymore, but I know that it is not the end.
My prayer is that You would make Your presence known and felt by my loved one as they endure this reality of life. I ask that You wrap Your arms around them and comfort them.
Though this time has brought so much heartache, I know that there is life in Christ, not only in this world but for eternity. I ask that You would strengthen my loved one with this knowledge, and that they will cling to Christ as they endure to the end of this chapter in their lives.
Please help them to find comfort and hope as they fix their eyes on Christ. May they know that the time on this earth, and their pain is only momentary, and that there is an eternal glory found in You when it all comes to an end. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
5. Prayer for the Family of the Dying
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

My heart is heavy for the family of [name], as they come closer to the reality of losing someone who they love and care about deeply. I know this is a tough time for them as a family, and that it is difficult to come to terms with.
My prayer is that You would please lead this family into Your comfort. As they mourn, may they know that You are with them, and that they are not alone.
I ask that You strengthen them, and carry them in this time that has brought great distress, sadness, and weariness. Please be the lifter of their heads and shower them with Your love, and mercy.
I ask that You would bring them peace as they come to terms with these last moments of their loved one’s life, and that You would give them the hope of eternal life in Christ. Please mend their broken hearts, and be their comforter. In Jesus’ name, amen.
