15 Bible Verses For When You Feel Behind In Life
A few weeks ago, I had one of those mental spirals after my workday.
I’m a mom of two little boys, I’m active in ministry, have wonderful friendships, and I have quite the “portfolio” work life with multiple online businesses plus a bit of sign language interpreting on the side. Oh, and I’m also still in a many-year-long battle with insomnia. I keep myself quite busy.
That day, though, my overwhelming feeling was, “I’m just so behind. I’ll never catch up.“
And it felt like it applied on both the daily level (I’m behind on dishes and work tasks) and also the broader level (I thought by this time in my life, I’d already have ____ accomplished or settled) and even on a spiritual level (I’ve been battling with ______ my whole life and I still haven’t learned this, Lord??).
It is strange how quickly those thoughts can sneak in. I should be further along by now. I thought I would be more established. More certain. More accomplished. More….something. Maybe more….everything?
Feeling behind in life is not always about ambition. Sometimes it is grief over timelines that did not unfold the way we imagined. Sometimes it is comparison. Sometimes it is just fatigue.
It’s a tricky thing to admit our limited human capacity and trust the Lord that what we have and what we can bring to the table is enough (with His help, that is).
If you have been looking at your life and thinking, I am late. I missed it. I should be somewhere else by now, may these Scriptures gently reorient your heart.

15 Bible Verses for When You Feel Behind in Life
1. Ecclesiastes 3:1
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (ESV)
This verse has steadied me more than once. Seasons mean change. They also mean timing. Not everything blooms at once. Not every calling unfolds early. The fact that something has not happened yet does not mean it never will.
2. Psalm 31:15
“My times are in your hand.” (ESV)
This is deeply personal. My times. Not just history’s timeline. Not just everyone else’s highlight reel. Yours. In His hand.
When you feel behind, this reminds you that your clock is not out of control. It is held.

3. Galatians 6:9
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (ESV)
Due season. That phrase matters. Harvest does not come immediately after planting. There is hidden growth first. If you are faithfully showing up and still not seeing results, that does not mean you are behind. It may mean roots are forming.
If discouragement is creeping in, When Hope Feels Hard: What Deep Faith Really Looks Like may meet you there.
4. Habakkuk 2:3
“For still the vision awaits its appointed time… If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” (ESV)
If it seems slow…Scripture names that feeling. God is not surprised by your impatience or your longing. Appointed time means there is intention behind the pace.
5. Philippians 1:6
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (ESV)
Completion is promised, but it is also progressive. You are in process. Feeling unfinished does not mean you are failing. It means you are still being formed.
6. Hebrews 12:11
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” (ESV)
There are seasons that feel like delay but are actually development. Growth rarely feels glamorous. It often feels slow, hidden, and stretching.
If you are in a stretching season, Abiding in the Storm: How To Be Still When Life Won’t Settle, may help you stay grounded.
7. Psalm 37:23
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.” (ESV)
Steps. Not leaps. Not giant milestones every month. Just steps. Established by the Lord. If you are walking faithfully today, you are not behind. You are moving at the pace He is setting.
Guided by His Eye: What Psalm 32 Teaches About God’s Gentle Guidance
8. Romans 8:28
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.” (ESV)
Even detours. Even disappointments. Even years that did not unfold as planned. Nothing is wasted in His hands.
When timelines feel tangled, this verse reminds you that God is still weaving.
9. 2 Peter 3:8
“With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (ESV)
God does not operate on the same urgency we do. What feels late to you may be perfectly aligned in His eternal perspective.
10. Lamentations 3:25–26
“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” (ESV)
Waiting is not wasted. It shapes your soul. It deepens dependence. It clarifies desire.
If waiting feels tough, How to Process Your Emotions with God offers a gentle framework.
11. Isaiah 40:31
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.” (ESV)
Waiting and renewal are connected. Not exhaustion and burnout. When you feel behind, your strength may feel thin. This verse promises renewal, not just eventual progress.
25 Bible Verses for Overthinking (When Your Thoughts Won’t Slow Down)
12. Proverbs 16:9
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (ESV)
It is okay that you had plans. It is okay that some of them shifted. Establishing your steps means God is actively guiding, not passively watching.
How to Hear God’s Voice in a Distracted World
13. John 15:4
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself… neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (ESV)
Fruit grows through abiding, not striving. If you are measuring yourself against someone else’s visible fruit, remember that your primary calling is connection with Christ.
If you are craving steady confidence rather than frantic comparison, How to Grow Confidence in Christ explores that shift.
14. Psalm 90:12
“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (ESV)
Numbering your days is not about panic. It is about perspective. Wisdom helps you focus on faithfulness today instead of obsessing over where you are not yet.
7 Spiritual Disciplines To Calm Anxiety (Biblical Practices That Actually Help)
15. Romans 12:12
“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (ESV)
This is a simple rhythm for seasons that feel delayed. Rejoice. Be patient. Stay constant in prayer. Not dramatic striving. Not frantic catching up. Just steady faithfulness.

Feeling behind in life can quietly erode your joy. It can make you rush, overcommit, or doubt yourself. But your life is not on a competitive timeline. It is on a redeemed one.
A Blessing For You
May you trust the pace God has set for you.
May you find peace in the season you are actually living, not the one you imagined.
And may you feel steady assurance that you are not late, not forgotten, and not behind in the hands of a faithful God.

Hello dear girl, Becky, here I am awake in the 3 o’clock hour of the night unable to sleep, matters weighting on me. I got up in faith to pray knowing that God would meet with me and the loss of sleep would not be felt today. Each verse, yes, yes yes yes. I’ll be camping out on them. God bless…
Marilyn, this was such a lovely comment to read. <3 Praying you were able to get some sleep and that the Lord lifted the heavy matters into His Almighty Hands.
