25 Bible Verses for Overthinking (When Your Thoughts Won’t Slow Down)

| | | |

Struggling with overthinking? These 25 Bible verses for overthinking will help calm a racing mind, quiet spiraling thoughts, and refocus your heart on God’s peace and truth.

Overthinking can drive you crazy.

That mental replay of a conversation you had three hours ago that haunts you as you try to sleep that night. The spiral of imaginary “what if” scenarios that take you on long, windy rabbit trails of made up scenarios that aren’t actually happening. The constant evaluating, re-evaluating, second-guessing, and forecasting.

I am a chronic overthinker. If there is a rabbit trail to run down, I’ve probably mentally traveled it. 😂

I’m a planner. A researcher. I genuinely love being prepared. There are strengths in that…but the downside is that I can trick myself into believing I have more control over things than I actually do, which becomes quite the heavy burden to carry.

Sometimes my overthinking is rooted in care. Did that comment come across wrong? Did I hurt her feelings?

Sometimes it’s insecurity. Am I doing this all wrong? Am I making a mistake without even realizing it?

And sometimes it’s control disguised as wisdom. If I just think through every possible outcome, maybe I can prevent future struggles. (I dealt with this one hardcore during my years of insomnia)

But overthinking rarely brings peace. It brings exhaustion.

If your thoughts feel loud, tangled, repetitive, or impossible to slow down, I hope these Bible verses can bring you the same safety, calm, and stability they brought to me.

25 Bible Verses To Calm Overthinking

1. Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Overthinking scatters your attention across ten different futures. This verse invites you to gently bring your mind back to one steady place…God Himself.

Peace is not found in predicting outcomes. It’s found in staying your mind on who He is, abiding in His presence.

2. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

Not every thought deserves unlimited access to your mind.

Overthinking often feels automatic, but Scripture reminds us that thoughts can be examined and redirected. Taking a thought captive does not mean suppressing it. It means asking…is this aligned with truth?

3. Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This is not a command to stop thinking. It is an invitation to redirect your thinking toward prayer.

Overthinking rehearses outcomes. Prayer releases them.

4. Psalm 94:19 (ESV)

When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

5. Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Overthinking leans heavily on your own understanding.

Trust loosens that grip.

You are not required to mentally solve every future scenario before it arrives. You can trust the Lord with your unknown future.

6. Matthew 6:34 (ESV)

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Overthinking lives in tomorrow.

Jesus gently brings you back to today. To the present.

This moment. This breath. What’s happening around you right now.

7. Psalm 46:10 (ESV)

Be still, and know that I am God.

Sometimes the most powerful response to overthinking is stillness.

Not empty silence, but intentionally redirecting your attention back to who God is.

8. Colossians 3:2 (ESV)

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Setting your mind is an active choice.

Our “autopilot” brain will passively drift to all kinds of worst case scenarios.

Overthinking sets your mind on fears, worries, and possible outcomes. Scripture invites you to intentionally set your mind on the Lord – the hope, the safety, the peace, the security that He brings.

9. James 1:5 (ESV)

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Sometimes overthinking masquerades as wisdom, convincing ourselves it’s wise to know more, plan more, predict more…but it often ends in a spiral.

You can find information in a lot of places in this world, but wisdom? That comes from the Lord who gives to us so freely.

Real wisdom does not require mental spiraling. It requires asking our Father.

10. Psalm 131:1–2 (ESV)

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up… I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul…

“I do not occupy myself” is such freeing language.

You are allowed to release mental burdens that were never yours to carry.

11. Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…

Renewal happens over time.

Overthinking patterns can be rewired by returning again and again to truth.

13. Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

A lamp does not illuminate ten miles ahead. It lights the next step.

14. Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you…

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace…

Grace invites you forward.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you… Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Jesus offers peace that is not dependent on mental certainty.

18. Psalm 55:22 (ESV)

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.

Sustain means ongoing support. Not saving you once and moving on. Continue to cast your mental burden on God.

You do not have to try to sustain yourself through constant analysis.

19. Psalm 61:2 (ESV)

From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Overthinking can make your heart feel faint…overwhelmed, stretched thin, mentally exhausted.

This verse doesn’t demand clarity. It doesn’t demand strength.

It simply asks to be led.

When your thoughts feel too loud and too heavy to sort through on your own, you can ask the Lord to lead you somewhere steadier than your own mind.

You don’t have to climb to the rock yourself.

He leads you there.

20. 2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Self-control includes your thought life.

21. Psalm 62:5 (ESV)

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

Silence can feel so uncomfortable to an overthinking mind. It’s almost like giving us even more space to spiral.

But, silence and stillness spent waiting with the Lord? Hope grows there.

22. Proverbs 16:3 (ESV)

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Planning is not wrong, but committing your plans loosens your grip on them, keeping you living faithfully being both intentional and interruptible.

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

Overthinking tries to ensure faithfulness.

But faithfulness belongs to God alone….and He will surely do it!

A Blessing for You

May you find freedom from the exhausting loops that keep replaying in your mind.

May you notice when your thoughts begin to spiral, not with shame, but with gentle awareness.

May you learn to uncurl your mental grip on outcomes you cannot control.

May Scripture become a steady place your mind can return to when it feels scattered.

And may the God who knows every thought you have meet you there, covering you with His peace that passes all understanding.

Amen.
