We’ve all experienced the hardships of life. Though the things we struggle with may look different than those our loved ones deal with, our friends often need encouragement in their lives just as much as we do.
One of the ways God created us, is by making us relational beings. When we see our friends struggle with discouragement, anxiety, disappointment, loss, and so many other issues of life, one of the best things we can do is ask God to encourage and strengthen them through prayer.
It’s important that we remember to pray for our friends. We can make a habit out of asking our friends if there is anything we can pray for them about, and sometimes when they might not have anything to say, we can still lift them up in prayer for the hidden struggles that they face, knowing that God sees them and knows what they need.

1. Prayer for a Friend Who Feels Discouraged
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for my dear friend, and their presence in my life. It’s never easy to see those who you love struggling, and beaten down.
I know that they are going through a tough time right now and that their spirit has felt weighed down and discouraged. My prayer is that You would help them fix their eyes on You and not on the storm that is surrounding them.
I know that it can be hard and that our concerns do not disappear, but I also know that they become dimmer when our focus is on You. I know that You know what they need right now, and my prayer is that You will provide them with exactly that.
Please fill them with the hope that only Your word can bring, and help them to meditate on the truth. I ask that You remove any thoughts that discourage them, or that are overwhelming.
When they feel as though all hope is lost, may they remember the hope that Christ brings, which is not only for today, or tomorrow but for every day after and for eternity. May Your word bring light into the dark areas of their lives, and may it fill them up with hope, truth, faith, and strength.

Lord,
I lift up my precious friend in prayer to You. You know the suffering that they are enduring, and how much strength they have lost throughout this illness. I am thankful that there are medicines and medical treatments that can aid in situations like this, but I know that You are the ultimate healer.
Thank You for creating my friend, and shaping every part of them. In the same way You have created them, I know that You are able to heal their body from sickness, if it is Your will.
My prayer is that You would shower my friend with Your compassion today, and reach out Your healing hand toward them. When they feel weak or discouraged, I ask that Your Spirit would strengthen them, and fill them with hope for a new day.
I know that sickness can feel overwhelming and all-consuming. My prayer is that in the midst of this sickness, You would help them to think of Your character, and to look to You as the joy of their strength.

Father,
I am so grateful that we can come to You with our troubles and our pleas. Thank You for being there when we seek You, and for listening when we pray to You.
Today, I want to pray for my friend, who is in need of encouragement. I know that the kind of encouragement they need is the kind that only You can give. My prayer is that You would prompt their heart to seek You. May they draw near to You, and You draw near to them.
Please make Yourself known to them in a way that they have never known before. Open their eyes to understanding Your word, and let it saturate their heart.
I ask that You remove anything in their lives that has distracted them or kept them away from turning to You. Help them to see that everything else in life is temporary and that there are many things that promise what only You can provide.
May they find You, when they seek You, and taste and see that You are good. Please help them to find their strength in You, and to bask in the hope that Christ offers them. May they know Your love for them, and may it transform their hearts and minds.

Lord,
Thank You for being our guiding light in this dark world. Thank You for being our strength when we are weak, and when our own strength fails us.

Today, I ask that You would be that guiding light in my friend’s life. You know the conflicting thoughts that they are struggling with, the anxiety that they have felt over their lives, and the decisions that they need to make.
The unknown can feel frightening, but my prayer is that You would remind them that nothing is unknown to You. Help them to seek You in this time, and to rely on You for guidance and instruction.
If there is a path that they should steer clear of, I ask that You would make it known to them. You know the intricate parts of what they are dealing with, and You know the outcome too.
Please provide them with Your guidance, and grant them the strength that they need for each day. Bless them with Your wisdom, and be with them through every situation and decision that lies ahead.

Dear Lord,
My heart goes out to my friend today. I know that they are hurting a lot and that their heart feels weighed down. As much as I wish I could take their pain away, I know that You alone are able to comfort them, and ease their pain in a way that no one else can.
My prayer is that they would know that You are close to those with a broken heart and that You save those with a crushed spirit.
May they take hold of Your mercies which are new every day, and experience the kindness that You bring. I ask that You renew their strength in this season, and help them to get through each day, growing stronger in faith, and hope. May they come to know You as a faithful friend, a loving father and a gracious God.
May they know that they are never alone, and that You are always near to them. Help them to trust You in this time, and to trust in Your character when things are tough.
Please comfort them in their hurt, and remind them that though their outer self is wasting away, the inner man is strengthened day by day. When their suffering feels overwhelming, please remind them of the hope that they get to look forward to.
Help them fix their eyes on eternity, and allow that hope to reframe the way they go through trials, and hardships.

Father in Heaven,
Where can we turn in times of need? When we feel weary when our minds are ridden with anxiety? We know it is aimless to turn to the things of the world, which can only give us temporary, circumstantial peace.
But when circumstances don’t seem to improve, how can we have peace? My prayer today is for my friend who is in need of Your peace.
You know the circumstances that have brought them deep discouragement and have robbed them of peace. You know the anxieties that they are experiencing and the thoughts that plague their mind.
Please bless them with the peace that only You can give. May they know Your peace personally, that surpasses all understanding. I ask that You would lift up their head, and help them to rest in Your goodness and grace.
When they feel overwhelmed, may they turn to You, and meditate on Your word. Help them to grow in their desire for You, and to spend time with You. Please remove any coping mechanisms that have taken Your place in their lives, and help them to seek You first.
Please help them to deal with what is causing anxiety in their lives, and to give it up to You in prayer.
