22 Bible Verses for Lent

| |

Use these 22 Bible verses for Lent during your season of prayer, fasting, and giving leading up to the Easter holiday.

What Is Lent?

Lent is the period of 40 days that takes place before Easter.

It is a season steeped in rich tradition and deep meaning—a time when Christians around the world set aside the everyday rush to focus on reflection, sacrifice, and renewal.

Rooted in the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, this period invites us to embrace practices like fasting, prayer, and acts of charity as a way to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Easter.

Fasting during Lent focuses on giving up something that is a normal part of your life, and being a type of sacrifice that reminds you of Christ’s sacrifice. Traditionally, fasting is from food, but some people give up eating out, social media, or entertainment, to name a few examples. One year, I even gave up worrying for Lent.

Lent also encourages generosity, and either giving or doing for others as a response to the grace and kindness that God has given to you.

Beginning with the solemnity of Ash Wednesday and flowing into the reflective journey of Holy Week, Lent challenges us to peel back the layers of our busy lives and find a deeper connection with God’s word.

Though Lent is not recorded in Scripture, it can be a wonderful time for believers to draw near to God and reflect on the work of Christ, and the grace that we get to share in.

In this post, you’ll find 22 Bible verses you can use during this season to inspire contemplation, encourage personal growth, and remind us of God’s steadfast love and grace.

Whether you’re new to doing something specific for Lent or have observed it for years, I invite you to join me in meditating on these Scriptures on the devastating beauty of Lent.
