4 Prayers for Marriage Restoration

|

Find strength in these 4 prayers for marriage restoration, as you seek God’s guidance and hope for a brighter future together.

Sometimes the trouble that you’re experiencing in your marriage can feel as though it is beyond repair.

Whether your marriage has been hurt by years of careless words, damaging behavior, neglect, infidelity or anything else in between. Or whether your marriage has recently taken a turn for the worse, and you are worried about where it is going, I hope you know that you’re turning to the right place – prayer.

Through God’s word, and through prayer, we learn that nothing is impossible for God. He is able to restore the brokenness of our relationships and bring new hope, life, and love to the areas where it has felt like it hasn’t existed for a while. There is no better place for you, and your spouse to turn to than the presence of God.

When it comes to our relationships, which include our marriage, it is also important to remember that we have to be right with God in order to be right with others. When our relationship with God has been neglected, it is just as easy for us to neglect our relationship with one another, and to act in selfish and destructive ways.

But when a man and woman are both committed to Christ, and turn to Him, submitting themselves to His word and will, He changes them, and those changes flow into their relationships with others. I encourage you, not only to pray as individuals but pray together for your marriage.

If you need some guidance on how to pray for your marriage, we have a few prayers that will do just that.

4 Prayers for Marriage Restoration

1. Prayer to Save Our Marriage

Father,

I am coming to You with a hurt that feels broken over the state of my marriage. Sometimes it feels as though we are so far gone, and that all that is left to do is throw in the towel.

I know my understanding of the situation is nothing compared to what You are able to do not only in our marriage but in us as individuals. We know that a marriage takes two people, and without one another committed to You and to each other, it will be hard for us to experience restoration in our marriage.

We know that You are the creator and designer of marriage and that You have created it to be a sacred vow made before You. We don’t want to take that lightly, and we are sorry for the many times when we have treated one another or our marriage as though it was not as valuable as it truly is.

We are in need of Your hand in our marriage, and we ask that You would save our marriage. We don’t want to see it crumble and fall away. Please extend Your mercy and grace toward us and help us to see the seriousness of where our marriage is headed.

Remind us of our vows that we made to one another, and before You. Help us both to see our marriage is worth saving, and investing our time, affection, and commitment towards. Please remove the things that are in our lives that hinder us from a marriage that is honoring to You and to one another.

Help us both to confess our sins towards You, and toward each other, and to seek how You want us to love and serve each other. Help us to change our dispositions towards one another, and to grow in our actions, attitudes, and feelings toward each other.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.

2. Prayer to Fix Our Eyes on God

Dear Lord,

I know that there are many things that we need to work on, but my prayer is that You will help us both to seek You. Sometimes we get it all wrong, and we fix our eyes either on ourselves or on one another.

It is easy to find fault with each other and to point a finger at one another and forget about the log in our own eye. That is what happens when we take our eyes off of You, and forget that we are sinners saved by grace, who get to extend that same kind of grace to each other.

Please forgive us for the many times when we have neglected to look to You.

Forgive us from the times when we have turned to other things, instead of You. Help us both to adjust our views, and turn them away from ourselves and towards You.

Help us to know that there is nothing more valuable than working on our relationship with You, and allowing that to flow into our relationship with each other. May we both submit ourselves to Your will, and grow in the roles that You have given us.

As a husband, may there be love that lays itself down for his beloved, and as a wife, may there be respect, and submission as unto Christ.

Help us not to deal with one another in pride and arrogance, but to deal with one another in humility, kindness, submission, and servitude. Let it not be about what we can get from one another, but about how we can serve one another.

Please help us to seek You as a couple, and to pray together and read Your word. May Your word be the foundation of our marriage, and guide us in all that we do.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.

3. Prayer for Forgiveness & Reconciliation

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for showing us what forgiveness and reconciliation look like. It is hard to imagine how anyone would love, and forgive those who acted as their enemy, yet that is exactly what You did for us.

While we were still sinners, while we were Your enemies, Christ displayed His love and died in our place on the cross. It is that kind of love and reconciliation that You call us to pursue with one another.

In our own strength and human understanding, it is hard to consider such a kind of forgiveness. But You have called us away from our old thinking and nature, and called us to live according to Your word, led by Your Spirit.

My prayer is that You would work in our hearts, and bring about true forgiveness between us. Help us to confess the ways we have hurt one another and ask for forgiveness.

Help us to extend forgiveness to one another that is an overflow of the forgiveness that You have shown us. Help us not to keep records of wrongs, especially when we have forgiven each other. Please help us grow in our communication, and in our relationship with one another.

We ask that You would remove any bitterness, anger, or malicious intentions that have crept into our hearts, and help us to treat one another with grace. I know that there is so much brokenness in our marriage, but nothing is impossible for You.

In our own strength, we can’t manage to love the way You love us, and the way in which You call us to love one another. We pray that Your Holy Spirit will enable us to love one another and to come together in unity.

May our marriage be an example, and a testament to Your wonder-working power, and ability to restore that which once was broken.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. Prayer to Rebuild Trust in Marriage

Lord,

It is so hard to come back from a trust that has been broken. I know that trust is not built overnight and that it is a series of actions and words that grow our trust and our confidence in one another. I know that there will be times when we let each other down and that it’s important to remember that both of us are fallible.

We won’t always get it right. But there are times when our trust is truly tested and situations where that trust may even be shattered into a million little pieces.

Right now we are really struggling with trust in our marriage. The trust that we once had felt as though it is a distant memory, and it has become hard to get back to that place.

Please help us both be patient and dedicated as we rebuild the trust in our marriage. If there are any behaviors that further destroy the trust we have, I ask that You would help us to change those behaviors and submit ourselves to Your word. Help us to fight against thoughts that are only destructive, and that further drive a sword in between us.

Help us both be committed to doing the work that it takes to rebuild our trust, and to be patient with one another along the way. Please help the love between us to blossom again, and help us to pursue one another.

Help us to confess, and repent from any sin that has or continues to tear us apart, and help us to submit ourselves to Your will. We know that we can do nothing apart from You. Please remind us to seek You, and to lift up our marriage to You in prayer daily.

In Jesus’ name amen.
